To the Library and Beyond There will be a meeting of the Board of Directors of Prairie Community Library, Inc. on Tuesday 7 January at 11 AM in the Library. If you are interested in becoming a director of the Board, we will be discussing the Library budget at this meeting. We traditionally elect new directors and officers in February. Beginning on January 4, Joan will open the Library on Saturdays from 10 AM till 3 PM and she hopes to see you students and your friends bring your games to use our spaces. Joan reviewed the 2008 book, Alex & Me in which author Irene Pepperberg, a research scientist at Brandeis University, describes her research working with her grey parrot Alex. She conducted many experiments with him to determine his cognitive abilities and she taught him several skills in addition to talking. This account of their work includes a comparison of Alex’s intelligence to that of chimpanzees. Alex was able to teach two other parrots some of his skills; he became famous, appearing in magazine articles and several TV shows. Ms. Pepperberg includes descriptions of emotional interactions she experienced with the parrot. This is a very fascinating and informative book about parrot intelligence! This month Library volunteers may want to think about plans to raise funds to ensure continuous operation of the Library. Our mission is to continue developing the Library as a sustainable service to the residents of the surrounding area, adapting to community needs as they arise. Our vision is to maximize the potential of future generations by providing a solid foundation of learning and knowledge. Sidney Sheldon said, “Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination.” In 2018, Prairie Community Library served 2,023 patrons and loaned 2,198 items. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library are committed to serving the residents of our area, and that will never change. "Service is what life is all about." We are also committed to doing all we can to meet the changing literary needs of our community. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Volunteering expands our resumes and improves our confidence.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
