Pirates win twice
The Prairie Pirates won a pair of home games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 7 they defeated Deary 64-22 in a non-league game. On Saturday, Jan. 11, they won a league game over Potlatch, 50-45.
Vs. Deary
The game against Deary started slowly with the lead changing hands a couple times early on. Deary scored first with a free throw but Phil Schwartz answered with a drive for a lay-up for Prairie’s first lead. Briggs Rambo heads upcourt against Deary after stealing the ball.
Deary answered with a basket to retake the lead but Nate Forsmann converted a 3-point play to put the Pirates back on top. Deary then hit a 3 to take a 5-6 lead. From that point on the game belonged to the Pirates.
Forsmann scored a lay-up to put Prairie back on top then Briggs Rambo scored 3 straight baskets for a 13-6 lead. Deary scored then Prairie closed out the first quarter with a 10-0 run fueled by their defense forcing turnovers.
Rambo scored a putback. Matt Wemhoff scored after a steal. A steal by Schwartz led to a putback by Wemhoff. Forsmann and Levi Gehring each scored after stealing the ball to make it 23-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Rambo and Wemhoff each scored to open the second quarter to cap off a 14-0 run and make it 27-8.
Deary broke the dry spell with 2 free throws and a 3-pointer but Prairie then scored the final 6 points of the half for a 33-13 lead. Forsmann scored 2 putbacks and Riley Shears added a lay-up.
Prairie then opened the third quarter with a 17-0 run to take the lead to 50-13. This time it wasn’t so much the turnovers as it was Deary being unable to make any shots. Deary was 0 for 9 in the quarter and scored just 3 free throws on 10 attempts.
Forsmann scored 3 baskets and a free throw in the 17-0 run while Wemhoff scored 3 baskets. Gehring and Schwartz added a basket each.
Deary finally scored in the second half with a free throw at the 2:37 mark. Rambo answered with a putback. After another Deary free throw, Collin Ray scored a putback to make it 54-18. Deary added a free throw to make it 54-16 after 3 quarters.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock  and Prairie outscored Deary 10-6. Ray scored a lay-up and a 3 while Chase VonBargen scored a 3 and Rambo scored a lay-up.
Forsmann had a double-double to lead the Pirates with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Rambo scored 14 with 9 rebounds while Wemhoff was also in double figures with 12 points. Ray scored 7, Gehring and Schwartz 4 each, Von Bargen 3 and Shears 2.
Prairie dominated the boards 47-22.
Wemhoff and Gehring each had 5 steals while Rambo had 4 as Prairie totaled 24 steals. Schwartz, Gehring, Rambo and Ray each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 30 for 71 from the field, 42%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%. Deary was 5 for 29 from the field, 17%, and 9 for 19 at the line, 47%.
Prairie also won the JV game 41-19.
The Pirates started the game with a 7-0 run. Kade Quintal got things started with a 3-pointer. Chase VonBargen then made a basket and 2 free throws for a 7-0 lead.
Deary finally scored with just 45 seconds left in the quarter. Quintal then hit his second 3 of the quarter. Deary added a free throw to make it 10-3 after 1.
Stetson Hankins opened the second quarter scoring with a 3. After a Deary basket, Jackson Enneking made the second of 2 free throws. Deary then scored 5 straight to cut the lead to 4 at 14-10.
Enneking scored a lay-up and Cade Armbrust stole the ball and scored to make it 18-10. Deary added a putback to make it 18-12 at the half.
Prairie opened the third quarter with 5 straight points. Ben Secrest made a free throw then Max Rehder scored a pair of baskets in the lane. Deary scored a free throw but Secrest answered with a lay-up. After another Deary free throw, Secrest scored a free throw and Hankins scored his second 3 of the game for a 29-14 lead.
Deary scored 3 straight to make it 29-17 after 3 quarters.
Prairie opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run Armbrust scored after driving the length of the court. Phineas Fitch scored twice on inbounds plays. Armbrust stole the ball and scored and Quintal finished the run with a lay-up.
Deary scored their only points of the fourth quarter with just 1:06 left to play. Fitch finished off the scoring with a pair of free throws for a 22-point win.
Quintal scored 8 to lead the JVs. Armbrust, Fitch and Hankins each scored 6. Rehder, VonBargen and Secrest scored 4 each and Enneking scored 3.
Deary had a 29-42 edge on the boards. Rehder led the Pirates with 7 rebounds while Nathan Weber and Quintal had 5 each.
VonBargen had 4 steals while Rehder had 3 steals and 4 assists.
Prairie was 15 for 58 from the field, 26%, and 7 for 12 at the line, 58%. Deary was 7 for 34 from the field, 21%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%.

Vs. Potlatch
On Saturday Prairie beat Potlatch for the first time since the 2022 District Tournament.

Potlatch tied it and Forsmann scored in the post to put Prairie back on top. Potlatch then scored 5 straight but a 3 by Schwartz tied it and a lay-up by Rambo put Prairie back on top. Shears added a free throw and Potlatch answered with a free throw to make it 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Shears scored for a 13-9 lead but Potlatch scored twice to tie it. Shears drove the baseline for a lay-up for the lead but Potlatch again tied it. A steal by Wemhoff led to a basket by Rambo. Rambo scored again after rebounding his own miss for a 19-15 lead.
Potlatch then scored 6 straight points to take a 10-21 lead. A steal by Rambo led to a basket by him to tie it but Potlatch then scored to take a 21-23 lead at the half.
Prairie scored 6 straight to start the second half as Forsmann scored a lay-up and Wemhoff scored twice for a 27-23 lead.
Potlatch answered with a 3 and 2 free throws to take back the lead.
Rambo scored a putback to put Prairie back on top but Potlatch tied it with a free throw. About that time Forsmann and Wemhoff each picked up their fourth fouls within 25 seconds of each other.
Rambo scored to give Prairie a 31-29 lead but Potlatch answered with 3 free throws to take back the lead with 2:45 left in the third quarter.
A basket by Rambo put Prairie on top with 1:45 left and Schwartz added 2 free throws to give Prairie a 35-32 lead after 3 quarters.
Rambo and Schwartz each scored to open the fourth quarter and put Prairie up by 7 at 39-32.
Potlatch scored by Rambo answered with a 3-point play for a 42-34 lead with 6:46. Gehring made a great pass on the play for an assist. Potlatch scored but Prairie answered with a lay-up by Forsmann. Potlatch made 2 free throws  but Prairie answered with a basket each by Forsmann and Rambo for their biggest lead of the game at 48-38 with 1:47 to play.
Potlatch scored a pair of baskets to get within 6 with 20 seconds left. Schwartz then made 2 free throws to put Prairie up by 8 with 13 seconds to play. A 3 in the final seconds cut the final margin to 5 points.
Rambo had a big game with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Schwartz was also in double figures with 12 points. Forsman scored 8 while Shears scored 5 and Wemhoff 4.
Prairie had a 35-23 rebounding edge.
Wemhoff had 5 steals and Gehring had 3 assists.
Prairie was 21 for 52 from the field, 40%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%. Potlatch was 14 for 33 from the field, 42%, and 15 for 21 at the line, 71%.
Prairie is now 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in league play.
Prairie also won the JV game 54-43.
Prairie jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Secrest made a basket and then a free throw and Rehder sank a 3-pointer.
Potlatch but the lead to 1 with a basket and a 3-pointer. Prairie then finished the first quarter with 9 straight points. VonBargen made a pair of 3’s and Hankins added a 3 for a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Weber and Secrest each scored a basket to open the second quarter and extend the lead to 19-5. After a Potlatch basket, Quintal made a 3 for a 22-7 lead, the biggest of the game.
Potlatch then closed the half with a 2-9 run to cut the lead to 8 at 24-16 at the half. Quintal scored Prairie’s basket in that run.
The third quarter saw the 2 teams trading baskets until the 3:30 mark when Potlatch went on a 0-10 run to tie the game at 34.
Prairie answered with a 6-0 run to end the third quarter as Rehder made a 3, Weber scored a putback and Quintal made a free throw for a 40-34 lead after 3.
Three times Potlathc was able to get within 3 in the fourth quarter but each time Prairie answered. The Loggers opened the fourth by hitting 3 of 4 free throws. Armbrust scored to push the lead back to 5. After 2 Potlatch free throws on a technical foul, Matthew Jones scored a lay-up.
After another Potlatch basket cut the lead to 3 at 44-41 with 3:27 left, Armbrust and Quintal each scored to push the lead to 48-41.
Potlatch scored their final basket with 2:08 left and Prairie ended the game with a 6-0 run. Fitch scored 2 baskets and Weber the other.
Quintal led a balanced scoring attack with 10 points. Secrest scored 9 and Armbrust 8. Rehder, VonBargen and Weber each scored 6 while Fitch scored 4, Hankins 3 and Jones 2.
Prairie had a 47-42 edge in rebounds. Armbrust led the team with 11 rebounds while Quintal had 10 and Rehder had 9.
VonBargen, Secrest, Rehder and Quintal each had 2 steals. Quintal led in assists with 4.
Prairie was 23 for 73 from the field, 32%, and 2 for 10 at the line, 20%. Potlatch was 16 for 45 from the field, 36%, and 9 for 19 at the line, 47%.
