Pirates lose twice PIRATES BOYS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE FOR 2023-24
The Prairie Pirates lost a pair of league games last week. On Tuesday, Jan. 16, they hosted Lapwai and lost 39-69. On Saturday, Jan. 20, they traveled to Troy and lost 49-61. Vs. Lapwai The last time Prairie was
able to keep it close against Lapwai into the second quarter. This time
around the game got away from them early.Lapwai scored first and Prairie tied it with 2 free throws by Briggs Rambo. Lapwai then scored 10 straight points and 17 of the next 19 to take a 4-19 lead. Rambo had Prairie’s only two points in that run on a short bank shot. Matt Wemhoff then made the first of 2 free throws to make it 5-19 at the end of the first quarter. Noah Behler opened the second quarter scoring with a hook shot for 2. Lapwai then scored 7 straight before Lee Forsmann made a free throw and Behler followed with a basket. After a 3-point play by Lapwai, Prairie put together an 8-1 run. Trenton Lorentz drove the baseline for a lay-up. Rambo sank a short jump shot. After a Lapwai free throw, Phil Schwartz stole the ball and scored and then Forsmann made a pair of free throws to cut a 19 point deficit down to 12 at 18-30. Lapwai then built the lead back to 20 by halftime at 23-43. Forsmann sank a 3-pointer and Rambo added a basket for Prairie. Lapwai opened the third quarter with a 4-16 run with Prairie’s only scoring coming on a basket each by Behler and Forsmann. Prairie was down 27-59 when the put together 7 straight points. Bheler made a free throw then Schwartz and Forsmann sank back to back 3’s. Prairie trailed 34-63 after 3 quarters. Forsmann made a free throw to open the fourth quarter then Lapwai scored a 3-pointer to invoke the running clock with 7:25 left to play. Prairie got a basket each from Logan Weber and Rambo while Lapwai added a basket and a free throw. Of note in the game is the defensive job Lorentz did on Lapwai’s Kase Wynott. Wynott had scored 45 points when the two teams played at Lapwai. This time he scored just 22 with 3 of those after Lorentz fouled out. Forsmann led the Pirates in scoring with 12 points with Rambo adding 10. Rambo was in the starting lineup in place of Riley Shears who suffered a concussion in the win over Genesee. Behler scored 7 points with Schwartz adding 5. Lorentz and Weber scored 2 each and Wemhoff scored 1. Lapwai had a 26-34 edge on the boards. Forsmann led the Pirates with 8 rebounds. No one had more than 1 steal for the Pirates while Wemhoff and Schwartz each had 3 assists. Prairie was 14 for 39 from the field, 36%, and 8 for 14 at the line, 57%. Lapwai was 24 for 53 from the field, 45%, and 19 for 30 at the line, 63%. The JV game was much more competitive as Prairie lost 38-41 in overtime. It didn’t look like it would be that kind of game after 1 quarter as Lapwai led 2-7 with Nate Forsmann scoring Prairie’s only 2 points. However Prairie opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run which saw Phil Schwartz scoring 8 of those 10 for Prairie, including 3 for 3 at the free throw line. Schwartz opened the quarter with a 3-pointer and Lapwai answered with a 2 point basket. Schwartz then converted a 3-point play and Lapwai had a technical added to the regular foul and Schwartz made both free throws for a 5-point play that gave Prairie their first lead. Jackson Enneking then hit a short bank shot for a 12-9 lead. Lapwai answered with 5 straight points. Forsmann scored on an inbounds feed from Schwartz to tie it at 14. Lapwai then added a free throw for a 14-15 halftime lead. In the third quarter Prairie was outscored 4-11 to start the half with Levi Gehring scoring the only 2 Prairie baskets. That made it 18-26. Enneking and Forsmann then each scored to cut the deficit to 22-26 after 3 quarters. Prairie conceivably could have led after 3 quarters but for a 0 for 9 showing at the free throw line in the quarter. Ben Secrest and Gehring each scored to tie the game early in the fourth quarter. After Lapwai scored, Enneking scored on an inbounds feed from Gehring to tie it again. After a Lapwai free throw, Gehring scored to give Prairie a 30-29 lead. A Lapwai 3 was answered by a 5-0 Prairie run. Gehring scored 2 baskets then Max Rehder made Prairie’s first free throw of the second half. It came on a double technical that saw a player from each team removed from the game to cool off. Lapwai also made 1 of the 2 free throws and then added a basket to tie the game at 36. Gehring made the second of 2 free throws to put Prairie ahead but Lapwai answered with a free throw. A putback by Collin Ray with 9 seconds left gave Prairie the lead. However Prairie was whistled for a foul at the buzzer on a 3-point attempt. Lapwai missed the first shot but made the next 2 to send the game to overtime. Lapwai then outscored Prairie 0-3 in overtime, all on free throws. Gehring led Prairie with 13 points. Schwartz scored 8. Enneking and Forsmann scored 6 each. Secrest and Ray scored 2 each while Rehder scored 1. Prairie had a 37-32 edge on the boards. Enneking and Chase VonBargen each had 6 to lead the Pirates. Gehring had 4 steals and 3 assists. Prairie was 16 for 47 from the field, 34%, and 5 for 23 at the line, 22%. They were just 2 for 18 from the line in the second half. Lapwai was 12 for 44 from the field, 27%, and 13 for 34 at the line, 38%. At Troy The game at Troy was tied at 47 with 3:30 left to play but Troy then scored 12 straight points to put the game away.Prairie started the game without Riley Shears who was still unable to play due to concussion protocols. Less than a minute into the game Prairie lost another starter as Lorentz went down with an ankle injury. 30 seconds later, Rambo scored the first points of the game. Troy tied it and then Behler put Prairie ahead with a pair of free throws. Troy scored 2 baskets to take their first lead but Rambo tied it with a basket. A 3 by Troy was matched by a 3 by Schwartz. Troy then scored the final 4 points of the quarter to take a 9-13 lead. Forsmann opened the second quarter scoring with a 3 and Weber followed with a basket for a 14-13 lead. Troy scored a basket to retake the lead then Rambo tied it with a free throw with 5:15 left in the half. Troy then went on a 0-10 run with Forsmann finally breaking the drought with a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in the half. Behler added a free throw to make it 19-26 at halftime. Behler scored to open the second half then Troy scored 4 straight. Behler scored a lay-up and then a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 4. After a Troy basket, Forsmann hit a 3 to cut the margin to 3 at 29-32. Troy then scored 9 of the next 12 points to push their lead to 9 at 32-41. Schwartz hit a 3 for Prairie’s points in the run. Forsmann closed out the third quarter with a pair of free throws to make it 34-41. A lay-up by Forsmann and 2 free throws by Behler cut the deficit to 3 at 38-41. After a Troy free throw, Forsmann scored a free throw. Troy scored on a bank shot then a 3 by Wemhoff and a basket by Rambo tied the score at 44. Troy’s Eli Stoner converted a 3-point play but Forsmann answered with a 3-pointer to tie it at 47 with 3:30 to play. Stoner then scored 8 straight points for Troy in the next minute of play for a 47-55 lead with 2:23 left. Troy then added 2 free throws and a basket to make it a game-ending 0-12 run. Rambo scored with 30 seconds left for Prairie but Troy added 2 more free throws for the final points of the game. Forsmann wound up with 17 points to lead the Pirates. Behler had a season high 12 points while Rambo scored 9. Schwartz scored 6, Wemhoff 3 and Weber 2. Troy had a 30-34 edge on the boards. Behler led the Pirates with 9 rebounds. Behler also had 3 steals and Weber had 4 assists. Prairie was 16 for 55 from the field, 29%, and 9 for 12 at the line, 75%. Troy was 20 for 45 from the field, 44%, and 18 for 23 at the line, 78%. Prairie is now 4-7 on the season and 1-7 in league play. Prairie won the JV game 59-25. Chase VonBargen hit a 3 to open the scoring then Troy scored 5 straight to take their only lead of the game. Rehder sank a 3 to give Prairie the lead and Enneking added a basket. Troy cut the lead to 1 with a basket but Prairie then scored 10 straight to end the first quarter with an 18-7 lead. Enneking made 4 free throws while Gehring and Nate Forsmann each scored a basket. Prairie made it a 17-point scoring run by scoring the first 7 of the second quarter. Schwartz opened the quarter with a 3 and Gehring and Forsmann each added a basket to make it 25-7. After a Troy basket Schwartz hit another 3 to make it 28-9. Troy scored then Prairie scored 6 straight as Schwartz, Forsmann and Ray each made a basket. After 2 Troy free throws Schwartz made hit third 3 of the quarter to make it 37-13. Troy scored to make it 37-15 at the half. Troy scored the first 4 points of the second half then Forsmann scored inside. After a 3 by Troy, Kade Quintal made back-to-back 3’s to give Prairie a 45-22 lead. After a Troy basket, Forsmann scored inside. Then with 2:57 left Troy made the second of 2 free throws for what turned out to be their final point of the game. Gehring made back-to-back baskets then Forsmann scored a putback. Caden Armbrust then scored at the buzzer to make it 55-25 and invoke the running clock for the entire fourth quarter. Enneking and Armbrust were the only ones to score in the fourth quarter. Forsmann wound up with 14 points to lead the scoring with Schwartz also in double figures with 11. Enneking and Gehring scored 8 each. Quintal scored 6, Armbrust 4, VonBargen and Rehder 3 each and Ray 2. Prairie had a 33-22 edge on the boards with Forsmann grabbing 7 to lead the team while Enneking added 6. VonBargen had 3 steals while Ray and Gehring each had 6 assists and VonBargen had 4. The JVs were 24 for 54 from the field, 44%, and 4 for 7 at the line, 57%. Troy was 10 for 32 from the field, 31%, and 3 for 6 at the line, 50%.
