Pirates win at Troy
The Prairie boys basketball team played just 1 game this past week as their game at C.V. was cancelled due to lack of numbers by the Rams. The boys won their only game Briggs Rambo is about to score a lay-up for 2 of his 22 points at Troy. Behind him is Phil Schwartz.of the week at Troy, 74-38, Saturday, Jan. 25.
Prairie started the game with a 17-0 run and were never threatened.
Phil Schwartz started the scoring with a 3-pointer. Nate Forsmann followed with a lay-up. Riley Shears then hit a 3. Briggs Rambo hit a short jumper then Forsmann scored on a tip-in. Schwartz made the second of two technical free throws then Rambo and Forsmann closed out the opening run with a lay-up each.
Troy finally got on the scoreboard at the 2:48 mark. Prairie then got a basket from Rambo and 2 free throws from Shears to make it 21-2. After 2 free throws by Troy, Forsmann, Logan Weber and Schwartz each scored to make it 27-4 after 1 quarter. It was Weber’s first game back after missing several games due to a back injury.
Troy scored to open the second quarter but Shears answered. After another Troy basket, Levi Gehring scored twice to make it 33-8. After a Troy free throw, Forsmann hit a 3-pointer, Shears made 2 free throws and Rambo scored to make it 40-9.
Rambo added a putback against 5 points by Troy to make it 42-14 at the half.
Troy had their best quarter in the third with 15 points but Prairie scored 23 to take a 65-29 lead into the fourth. Shears and Rambo each scored to open the quarter. After a Troy basket, Shears connected for 3. After a Troy 3, Rambo scored a lay-up. A Troy free throw was answered by a basket each from Forsmann and Rambo. After a Troy basket, Schwartz connected for 3. Troy answered with a 3 but Schwartz scored on a drive for a lay-up. A basket and 2 free throws by Troy made it 60-29 but Rambo scored his fourth basket of the quarter and Chase VonBargen closed out the quarter with a 3 to make it 65-29.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Shears scored a lay-up to open the fourth and Matt Wemhoff followed with a 3. After a Troy free throw, Rambo scored 2 baskets for Prairie’s final points and a 74-30 lead.
Troy then scored the final 8 points of the game on a lay-up and two 3-pointers.
Rambo scored 22 points to lead all scorers. He was 6 of 7 from the field in the second half. Shears scored 16 with Forsmann scoring 13 and Schwartz 11. Gehring scored 4, Wemhoff and VonBargen 3 each and Weber 2.
Prairie had a 31-14 advantage on the boards led by Rambo with 12 rebounds.
Wemhoff had 5 steals. Shears had 6 assists and Rambo and Schwartz had 5 each.
Prairie was 31 for 57 from the field, 54%, and 5 for 10 at the line, 50%. Troy was 12 for 30 from the field, 40%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%.
Prairie is now 8-5 on the season and 3-4 in league play.
In the JV game a lay-up by Caden Armbrust with 6 seconds left gave Prairie a 45-44 win.
Troy scored first but Prairie answered with 6 straight point by Chae VonBargen. He had a steal that led to a lay-up, 2 free throws and a perimeter shot that was just short of a 3.
Troy came back with a basket and a 3 but VonBargen put Prairie back on top with a 3.
Troy closed the first quarter with 5 straight points for a 9-12 lead.
Troy then scored the first 6 of the second quarter to make it 9-18. Ben Secrest broke the Troy scoring run with a baseline shot. After a Troy basket Max Rehder sank a 3-pointer. After another Tory basket, Kade Quintal scored a pair of baskets to cut the deficit to 4. Troy then scored at the buzzer for an 18-24 halftime lead.
Prairie trailed through most of the third quarter. They got within 3 after a basket each by Secrest and Nathan Weber at 30-33. After a Troy basket, Secrest hit a 3 and then Rehder converted a 3-point play to give Prairie their first lead since the first quarter at 36-35. That’s how the third quarter ended.
Secrest scored on an inbounds play to open the fourth. After a Troy basket, Rehder hit a 3 for a 41-37 lead with 3:27 to play. Troy answered with a pair of baskets to tie the game at 41 with 2:21 left. Armbrust scored a putback with 1:21 left to give Prairie the lead. Troy however came up with a 3-point play with 21 seconds left to take a 43-44 lead.
With 6 seconds left Quintal passed to Armbrust who scored the game-winning lay-up..
Rehder led the team in scoring with 13 points. Secrest scored 11 with VonBargen scoring 9. Quintal scored 6, Armbrust 4 and Weber 2.
Prairie had a slim 37-35 edge on the boards. Quintal had 10 to lead the Pirates.
Jackson Enneking, Quintal and Rehder each had 2 steals while Quintal had 5 assists.
Prairie was 18 for 63 from the field, 29%, and 5 of 7 at the line, 71%. Troy was 20 for 42 from the field, 48%, and 2 for 9 at the line, 22%.
