Pirates lose twice
The Prairie boys basketball team finished their regular season with a pair of losses. On Friday, Feb. 9, they celebrated Senior Night and lost to Logos 46-54 at Cottonwood. On Monday, Feb. 12, they traveled to Orofino and lost 54-57.
Senior Night vs. Logos
Prior to the game against Logos Prairie honored 3 senior basketball players and 2 senior cheerleaders. Noah Behler, Lee Forsmann and Trenton Lorentz were honored with the families as were cheerleaders Miranda Klapprich and Meghan Fowler.
When the game started Prairie got off to a good start with Forsmann and Lorentz each scoring to give Prairie a 4-0 lead. Noah Behler pulls down a rebound in the Logos game.
Logos then answered with 5 straight to take their first lead. A basket by Riley Shears, a 3 by Phil Schwartz and a lay-up by Matt Wemhoff each put Prairie ahead but Logos answered each time. Forsmann then hit a 3 to give Prairie a 14-12 lead after 1 quarter.
Forsmann scored to open the second quarter and put Prairie up by 4. Logos answered with 5 straight points. Forsmann scored again at the 6:17 mark to give Prairie an 18-17 lead. However those were Prairie’s final points of the first half. Logos ended the first half with a 0-11 run to take an 18-28 lead at the half.
Prairie twice was able to get back within 6 in the second half but could get no closer.
An 8-4 run to open the second half cut the margin to 26-32. Forsmann made 2 free throws, the third senior, Behler, got on the scoreboard with a free throw, Briggs Rambo made a basket, Logan Weber made a free throw and Forsmann scored from just inside the 3-point arc for Prairie’s 8 points in that run.
Logos outscored Prairie 2-5 the rest of the quarter with Weber and Schwartz each tallying a free throw.
Prairie trailed 28-37 after 3 quarters.
Logos scored to put Prairie down by 11 to open the fourth quarter but Schwartz answered with 2 free throws. Two baskets by Logos gave Logos their biggest lead at 13 points, 30-43. Rambo scored but Logos answered to again lead by 13.
A basket by Behler and a 3 by Forsmann cut the deficit to 8. After a Logos 3, Forsmann scored a 3 and Schwartz scored a lay-up to get the Pirates back within 6 at 42-48 with 2:15 left.
Logos then hit a 3 and Prairie answered with a basket by Rambo. Logos hit another 3 with 31 seconds left to clinch it and Forsmann closed out the scoring with a drive for a lay-up.
Forsmann scored 21 to lead all scorers. Schwartz scored 8, Rambo 6, Behler 3 and Lorentz, Shears, Weber and Wemhoff 2 each.
Rebounding was even at 24 each. Forsmann led the Pirates with 9 rebounds while Behler added 7.
Forsmann and Wemhoff each had 1 steal and Shears had 3 assists.
Prairie was 17 for 36 from the field, 47%, and 8 for 16 at the line, 50%. Logos was 20 for 46 from the field, 43%, and 5 for 7 at the line, 71%.
The Prairie JV team played the Nezperce varsity and won 63-54.
The game was close until the fourth quarter when a 12-0 Prairie scoring run turned a 49-50 deficit into a 61-50 lead.
Nezperce scored the first 4 points of the game then Max Rehder banked home a 3 to get Prairie on the board. Nezperce then scored 6 straight to take a 3-10 lead. Prairie answered with 12 straight points to take their first lead of the game. Prairie got baskets from, in order, Levi Gehring, Nate Forsmann, Jackson Enneking, Gehring, Forsmann and Forsmann again for a 15-10 lead.
Nezperce then outscored the Pirates 2 to 8 to take a 17-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. Caden Armbrust scored on an inbounds play for the only points in that run.
Prairie took back the lead on a 3 by Gehring to open the second quarter. After Nezperce tied it Forsmann sank a 3 and Gehring added a basket for a 25-20 lead. A Nezperce scored was answered by a basket by Chase VonBargen. At that point Nezperce put together a 1-12 run highlighted by three 3 pointers by Carter Williams. Rehder broke the run with his second 3 of the game. Nezperce scored 2 more baskets before Collin Ray ended the half with a 3 to make it 34-38.
Ray opened the second half with a 3 and Enneking added a lay-up for a 39-38 Prairie lead.
The two teams traded scores for the rest of the quarter with Enneking and Kade Quintal scoring for Prairie. Ray ended the quarter with 2 free throws that made it 45-46 after 3 quarters.
A basket each by Gehring and Ben Secrest gave Prairie a 49-46 lead in the fourth. Nezperce answered with 2 baskets to retake the lead at 49-50 with 5:40 to play.
That’s when Prairie put together their 12-0 run to take control of the game. Gehring started it with a lay-up on an inbounds play to put Prairie ahead. Secrest added a baskets and Quintal hit a 3. Enneking, Secrest and Rehder each made 1 of 2 free throws. Ray then ended the run with a basket for a 61-50 lead with 1:15 to play.
Nezperce mad a free throw to halt the run but Ray answered with 2 more free throws to make it 63-51 with 11 seconds to play. Nezperce hit a buzzer-beating 3 to end it.
Gehring scored 13 and Ray 12 to lead the scoring. Forsmann scored 9 with Rehder adding 8, Enneking 7, Secrest and Quintal 5 each. VonBargen and Armbrust each scored 2.
Prairie had a 43-34 rebounding edge led by Forsmann with 10.
Gehring had 4 steals and VonBargen had 3 steals and 3 assists. Rehder also had 3 assists.
Prairie was 24 for 60 from the field, 40%, and 8 for 16 at the line, 50%. Nezperce was 22 for 59 from the field, 37%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%.

At Orofino
Orofino came out on fire as they jumped out to a 0-7 lead. Lee Forsmann got Prairie on the scoreboard with a shot from just inside the 3-point arc and then was taken out of the game. He didn’t return until the start of the second half.

He made three 3-pointers in the first quarter with the third tying the game at 13-13. After an Orofino basket, Shears hit a 3-pointer to give Prairie their first lead of the game. Orofino then scored a 2 and a 3 to take a 16-20 at the end of the quarter.
Shears scored twice to open the second quarter and tie the game at 20. After an Orofino basket, Schwartz made his 4th 3 of the half to put Prairie ahead 23-22.
After an Orofino basket, Lorentz and Shears each scored for a 27-24 lead. Orofino tied it with a 3-point play but Rambo answered with a basket. Orofino tied it again then Rambo made a free throw and Shears scored a lay-up at the buzzer on an inbounds play for a 32-29 halftime lead.
Forsmann took the floor again to start the second half and scored Prairie’s first points of the quarter. He again came out of the game a little over 2 minutes in. Apparently coach Tim Scheffler wanted to keep him healthy for their district opener against Kamiah.
Orofino then tied it up but Wemhoff scored to put Prairie back on top. Orofino then outscored Prairie 4-10 the rest of the quarter to take a 40-44 lead into the fourth period. Weber and Gehring scored Prairie’s 4 points.
Lorentz scored a basket to open the fourth and added a free throw to cut the lead to 1. After an Orofino basket, Weber made to free throws to again cut the margin to 1. After and Orofino free throw, Rambo scored from the baseline to tie it at 47 with 5:16 to play.
Orofino made 2 free throws but Shears tied it with a lay-up. Orofino took back the lead with a free throw but Lorentz converted a 3-point play on a drive to the hoop for a 52-50 lead with 3:31 left.
Orofino tied it with a basket and then took back the lead with a 3. With 1:10 to play Weber made 2 free throws to cut the lead to 1. With 38 seconds left Orofino scored to go up by 3. Orofino then made 2 free throws to go up by 5 with 9.6 seconds left. After a timeout, Prairie got the ball downcourt in a hurry and Schwartz hit a 3 with 1.8 seconds left to cut the deficit to 2. Prairie quickly fouled on the inbounds. The clock was reset to 1 second and Orofino made the first of 2 free throws. A violation was called on the second free throw and he got to shoot it again. Prairie got the rebound and an instantaneous timeout. They put Forsmann back in and were going to try a long inbounds to the far end but Lorentz’ inbounds pass scraped the ceiling and the ball was turned over to Orofino who ran out the clock.
Shears and Schwartz each scored 15 points to lead the Pirates in scoring. Lorentz added 8 points. Weber scored 6 while Rambo scored 5. Forsmann scored 4 and Wemhoff and Gehring scored 2 each.
Prairie had a 32-26 edge on the boards. Lorentz had 8 rebounds to lead the team.
Shears had 4 steals and 5 assists.
Prairie was 22 for 50 from the field, 44%, and 7 for 9 at the line, 78%. Orofino was 22 for 46 from the field, 48%, and 12 for 19 at the line, 63%.
Prairie ends their regular season with a record of 9-11 overall, 4-10 in league play.
Orofino also won the JV game 52-58.
Prairie trailed 5-14 at the end of the first quarter with a 3 by VonBargen and a lay-up by Enneking accounting for their points.
They were down 7-23 in the second quarter when they rallied to get back into the game. Prairie went on a 14-0 run. Quintal started it with a basket and Forsmann followed with a lay-up. VonBargen scored a putback and Forsmann made 2 free throws. Gehring then hit a pair of 3’s to cut the deficit to 2 at 21-23. Orofino broke the run with a 3 but Gehring answered with his third 3-pointer to make it 24-26 at the half.
Orofino started the second half with a 0-9 run and led most of the third quarter by from 7 to 10 points. Prairie got a 3 each from Quintal and Ray in the quarter and a basket each from Secrest and Gehring and a free throw from Forsmann. They trailed 35-43 after 3 quarters.
Orofino maintained their lead until with 4:25 lead and trailing 43-52, Prairie put together 7 straight to again pull within 2. Quintal made a basket and Ray scored twice. Quintal then added a free throw to make it 50-52 with 2:47 left.
Unfortunately the rallied stalled and Orofino outscored Prairie 2-6 the rest of the way with Cole Duclos scoring Prairie’s 2 points.
Gehring wound up with 13 points to lead the scoring. VonBargen scored 10. Quintal scored 8, Ray 7, Forsmann 5, Rehder 3 and Enneking, Secrest and Duclos 2 each.
Prairie had a 42-33 edge on the boards with Gehring grabbing 7 to lead the team.
Duclos had 3 steal and Ray, Forsmann, VonBargen, Quintal and Rehder each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 60 from the field, 32%, and 6 for 15 at the line, 40%. Orofino was 20 for 48 from the field, 42%, and 14 for 26 at the line, 54%.
