Lady Patriots season ends The St. John Bosco Lady Patriots had a 4 point lead at halftime but wound up losing 30-34 to Nezperce in a loser-out game at the District Tournament in Lapwai Wednesday, Feb. 7. Bosco jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Sarah Waters and Julia Wassmuth each scored a basket and Noelle Chmelik made 2 free throws. Nezperce then came back with 5 straight to finish the first quarter trailing just 6-5. Nezperce then took their first lead with a basket to open the second quarter. The Patriots broke a 5½ minute scoring drought when Wassmuth scored a lay-up. Nezperce took back the lead then Waters scored and Rachel Sonnen added a putback for a 12-9 lead. After a free throw by Nezperce, Sonnen made a defensive rebound and fed the ball out to Chmelik who took the ball all the way for a lay-up to give the Patriots at 14-10 lead at the half. However, Wassmuth picked up her third foul with 1:29 left in the half and then picked up her fourth foul early in the third quarter and went to the bench for the last 5:47 of the period. Nezperce scored the first 6 points of the second half to retake the lead. Catherine Seubert scored on an inbounds play to tie it and Waters scored to put the Patriots back on top. Nezperce took back the lead with 3 straight points but Waters tied it with a free throw. A Nezperce free throw put the Nighthawks back on top put Savannah Perrin converted a 3-point play to give Bosco a 22-20 lead with 1:02 left in the quarter. Nezperce then made 3 of 4 free throws in the final 40 seconds to take a 22-23 lead into the fourth quarter. The Nighthawks added a basket to open the fourth quarter but Chmelik made a pair of baskets to five Bosco a 26-25 lead with 4:13 left. Nezperce took back the lead with 4:00 to play and then hit the game’s only 3-pointer for a 4-point lead with 3:35 left. Wassmuth, who managed to play the entire fourth quarter without picking up another foul, scored to cu the lead to 2 but Nezperce answered with a pair of baskets to take their biggest lead of the game with 9 seconds left. Wassmuth scored the game’s final 2 points to cut the final margin to 4. Wassmuth and Chmelik each scored 8 points to lead the Patriots. Waters scored 7. Perrin scored 3 and Sonnen and Seubert scored 2 each. Rebounding was nearly even as Nezperce held a 35-36 edge. Waters had 9 rebounds to lead the Patriots while Chmelik added 7. Waters had an amazing 10 steals and Perrin and Vivian Dahlsrud each had 2 assists. The Patriots were 13 for 49 from the field, 27%, and 4 for 11 at the line, 36%. Nezperce was 12 for 39 from the field, 31%, and 9 for 23 at the line, 39%. Kairys Grant had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Nezperce. The Patriots end their season at 8-9 with a fourth place finish at District.
