Lady Pirates take third at State
For the second straight year the Prairie Lady Pirates finished third at State having been beaten in the semifinals by the eventual state champion.
On Thursday, Feb. 15, the #5 seeded Pirates defeated the #4 seeded Murtaugh Red Devils 66-54. That was the only game in the entire 6 classifications at the state tournament where a lower seed defeated a higher seed. On Friday, Feb. 16 they ran into the #1 seeded Grace Grizzlies and lost 52-56. Finally on Saturday, Feb. 18, they defeated the #2 seeded Oakley Hornets 60-41 to earn the third place trophy.
Vs. Murtaugh
The opening game against Murtaugh was close through most of the first half. About midway through the third quarter Prairie started to create some separation and went on to win by 12. Lexi Schumacher gets fouled on a lay-up attempt against Murtaugh. At left is Sydney Shears.
Murtaugh scored the first 3 points of the game but Lexi Schumacher got Prairie on the board with a full court drive for a lay-up and Kylie Schumacher scored a lay-up to give Prairie their first lead at 4-3.
Murtaugh scored 5 straight points to take a 4-8 lead. Kylie Schumacher scored a lay-up but Murtaugh answered. A 3 by Lexi Schumacher cut the deficit to 1. After a Murtaugh free throw, Kylie Schumacher scored a putback to tie the game at 11.
After a Murtaugh basket, Prairie took back the lead on a pair of lay-ups by Kylie Schumacher. After Murtaugh tied it, Kylie Schumacher put Prairie back on top with a free throw. Murtaugh then tied it with a free throw and it stood at 16-16 after 1 quarter.
Murtaugh scored to open the second quarter but Sage Elven tied it with 2 free throws. Murtaugh took back the lead but Elven tied it. After another Murtaugh basket, Lexi Schumacher tied it with a short hook shoot and Elven added a basket to put Prairie on top.
Murtaught tied it at 24 then Lexi Schumacher scored the next 6 points. She made a basket, then hit a 3. A free throw put Prairie up 30-24. After a Murtaugh basket, Elven scored a basket and Kylie Schumacher a 3-point play to give Prairie a 35-26 lead. Murtaugh scored to end the half and make it 35-28.
The Red Devils opened the second half with a tight halfcourt man defense and Prairie coach Lori Mader called a quick time out. Murtaugh was still able to score the first 6 points of the half and cut their deficit to just 1 points. Alli Geis broke the scoring drought with a basket and Lexi Schumacher followed with a free throw for a 4-point lead.
Murtaugh scored to get within 2 then Prairie scored 6 straight points and finished the third quarter by outscoring Murtaugh 14-6. Kylie Schumacher scored a putback and Lexi Schumacher followed with a short bank shot. A steal by Hailey Hanson led to a basket by Elven to make it 44-36. A Murtaugh basket was answered by another basket by Elven. After another Murtaugh baskets, Kylie and Lexi Schumacher each scored to give Prairie a 10-point lead at 50-40. A Murtaugh baskets was answered by Kylie Schumacher as Prairie took a 52-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
A putback by Hanson open the fourth quarter scoring. 3 Murtaugh points were answered by a driving lay-up by Lexi Schumacher and a basket by Elven for a 58-45 lead.
Another Murtaugh basket was answered by a basket on an inbounds play and then 2 free throws by Lexi Schumacher for a 62-47 lead, Prairie’s biggest lead of the game.
Murtaugh scored 4 straight to get within 11 but 2 free throws by Lexi Schumacher and a putback by Elven matched their biggest lead at 66-51. Murtaugh then scored the game’s final 3 points to cut the final margin to 12.
Lexi Schumacher led all scorers with 26 points. Kylie Schumacher scored 20 while Elven scored 16. Hanson and Geis scored 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 44-30 as Kylie Schumacher had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Lexi Schumacher had 9 rebounds while Elven and Shears had 8 each.
Elven had 5 steals while Geis and Shears had 4 assists each.
Prairie was 27 for 60 from the field, 45%, and 10 for 13 at the line, 77%. Murtaugh was 24 for 61 from the field, 39%, and 6 for 17 at the line, 35%.
For those who say they have never heard of Murtaugh, they obviously haven’t been a state tournament regular. In fact they earned their first ever girls state tournament trophy after beating Rimrock and Valley for the consolation title.

Vs. Grace
Grace doubleteams Hailey Hanson.In the semifinal against Grace, Prairie didn’t seem ready to play at the start as Grace jumped out to a 0-10 lead and forced several turnovers from the Pirates. Prairie finally got on the scoreboard with a putback by Elven at the 5:30 mark. Grace then scored 4 more points for a 2-14 lead.
Prairie then gathered themselves and scored 6 straight points. Kylie Schumacher scored a free throw. Lexi Schumacher stole the ball and drove for a lay-up. Shears made 2 free throws and Elven added a free throw to cut the deficit to 8-14.
Grace then scored a pair of baskets to make it 8-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Grace opened the second quarter with a 3 for an 8-21 lead. Elven and Kylie Schumacher scored to get the deficit back under 10 but Grace then scored 3 of 4 free throws to push the lead back to 12 at 12-24 with 4:12 left in the half.
A 3 and then a 2 on a steal by Lexi Schumacher and a lay-up by Kylie Schumacher got Prairie within 5 at 19-24. Prairie was again within 5 at 21-26 after a lay-up by Lexi Schumacher and at 23-28 after a midrange shot by Geis with 1:38 left in the half. Grace then scored the final 6 points of the half to go back up by double figures, 23-34.
The lead was maintained at about 10 though the first 5 minutes of the third quarter. Prairie was down 29-40 with 3:23 left then Lexi Schumacher made 2 free throws, Kylie Schumacher made a basket and Elven connected for 3 to pull the Pirates within 4 at 36-40 with 1:38 left in the third.
As they seemed to do all game though, Grace answered with 5 straight points to take a 36-45 lead into the fourth quarter.
Elven scored a putback to open the fourth quarter but a 3 and 2 free throws by Grace put them back up with 12 at 38-50.
Prairie then put together a 12-3 run over the next 5 minutes to pull within 3 at 50-53 with 59 seconds left. Elven started it with a basket and a free throw. Kylie Schumacher drove for a lay-up to cut the deficit to 7. Grace scored a basket but Elven answered. Grace made a free throw then started missing at the line which helped the Pirates rally. Elven hit a 3 and Kylie and Lexi Schumacher each made a free throw to make it 50-53.
Grace’s Jacie Christensen then made 2 free throws with 53 seconds left but missed 4 straight in the final 50 seconds. Geis scored a putback with 34 seconds left to pull Prairie within 3 again at 52-55. Prairie had their chances, missing several shots including some 3-point shots in the final seconds. Grace added the final point at the line with 1.8 seconds to play.
Elven had a big double-double to lead the Pirates with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Lexi Schumacher scored 16 points while Kylie Schumacher scored 10 with 9 rebounds. Geis scored 4 and Shears 2.
Prairie had a 40-22 rebounding edge over the taller Grizzlies.
Lexi Schumacher had 2 steals and 4 assists while Shears also had 2 steals and Elven has 3 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 46 from the field, 41%, and 11 for 17 at the line, 65%. Grace was 19 for 53 from the field, 36%, and 14 for 29 at the line, 48%.
Prairie had 21 turnovers in the game although it seemed like more, while Grace had just 11.
Grace went on to beat Lapwai 40-47 in the championship game.

Vs. Oakley
Prairie again fell behind at the start of the third place game against Oakley. Oakley hit a 3 to open the game. Lexi Schumacher made a free throw then Oakley scored 2 baskets for a 1-7 lead.Sage Elven scores 2 of her 20 points against Oakley in the third place game. She scored 56 points in the 3 games at State.
Prairie then scored 11 straight to take the lead and never gave it back. Elven scored then Kylie Schumacher converted a 3-point play. Lexi Schumacher scored to give Prairie the lead. Kylie Schumacher added 2 more baskets for a 12-7 lead.
After an Oakley free throw, Elven scored a free throw. After 2 Oakley free throws, Lexi Schumacher drove for a lay-up to make it 15-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Elven was the only one to score for Prairie in the second quarter but she scored enough to keep Prairie in the lead.
Oakley scored the first 2 points of the quarter then Elven responded with a basket and 3 free throws to make it 20-12. After an Oakley basket, Elven scored to make it 22-14. Oakley then got a basket and a 3 to pull within 3 points at 22-19. Elven scored 2 straight baskets to put Prairie up 26-19. Oakley closed out the half with a 3 and a 2 to cut the deficit to 26-24 at the break.
Lexi and Kylie Schumacher each made 1 of 2 free throws to open the second half. Oakley then scored a 3 to pull within 1 point at 28-27. A basket each by Lexi and Kylie Schumacher was answered by a 3-point play and another free throw by Oakley to again pull within 1.
Lexi Schumacher drove for a lay-up but Oakley answered to make it 34-33 with 2:33 left in the third quarter.
Elven scored a lay-up and Shears added a putback to make it 38-33. After an Oakley basket, Elven scored on a drive and spin move for a lay-up and then Geis hit from just inside the 3-point distance with 2 seconds left to give Prairie a 42-35 lead after 3 quarters.
Elven scored a putback and Geis hit a 3 to put Prairie up 47-35 early in the fourth quarter.
After an Orkaly baskets, Prairie scored another 6 straight points. Kylie Schumacher scored a putback and then added a free throw and Hanson sank a 3-pointer to make it 53-37.
After an Oakley basket, Prairie scored 7 straight to take their biggest lead f the game. Hanson, Kylie Schumacher and Lexi Schumacher each scored a basket for a 59-39 lead. Coach Lori Mader then subbed out her lone senior, Geis, to an ovation from the crowd. She then subbed in the bench players while Hanson was shooting free throws, Hanson made the first of 2 for a 60-39 lead.
Oakley scored the final basket for the 19-point final margin.
Elven scored 20 points and had 14 rebounds, 7 steals, 5 blocks and 2 assists. Kylie Schumacher scored 15 while Lexi Schumacher scored 12. Hanson scored 6, Geis 5 and Shears 2.
Prairie had a 46-35 edge on the boards.
Hanson and Lexi Schumacher each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 24 for 59 from the field, 41%, and 10 for 18 at the line, 55%. Oakley was 16 for 56 from the field, 29%, and 4 for 8 at the line, 50%.
Prairie ends their season with a record of 19-8. After starting the season 6-6 they won 13 of their last 15 games.
