A record year for school records
This has been a record year for breaking school records by the Prairie girls and boys track teams.
There were 12 school records broken and 2 more that were established in a new event, the javelin. Several of those records, including the javelin records, were broken more than once this year.
Trenton Lorentz broke the school record in the 200 meter dash several times. He originally broke Lucas Arnzen’s record in the event at State last year, running 22.89. This year he broke it several times to bring the mark down to 22.15 at the recently completed State Meet.
Lorentz also broke Arnzen’s record in the 400 of 50.89 with a 50.43 clocking on April 13.
Matt Wemhoff established a school record in the javelin at the Lewiston Invitational on March 22 and broke it a couple more times with the last time being on April 27 when he tossed it 148’7”.
Cole Duclos and Briggs Rambo both tied the previous pole vault record of 10’0” during the season. At the Regional Meet at Lapwai on May 11, Duclos cleared 10’6” to break the record.
Bennie Elven broke the school record of 159’10½” set by J.D. Riener at the White Pine Meet on April 29, 2006 with a toss of 164’6” at the Regional Meet at Lapwai on May 10.
The boys 4x100 relay record was lowered from the 45.31 mark set last year by Elven, Noah Geis, Secrest and Lorentz at least twice this year with the current standard now at 43.60 by Dylan Uhlenkott, Geis Secrest and Lorentz at the State Meet this year.
The boys 4x200 relay record lasted until the second Prairie Meet on May 23 when they broke the previous record of 1:35.1 held by Pat McWilliams, Clayton Lockett, Eddie Anderson and Duane Remacle that was set in 1995. It was then broken again at the Regional Meet and then lowered again to 1:30.23 at the State Meet on May 18. Uhlenkott, Geis, Secrest and Lorentz hold the new record of 1:30.23.
The boys 4x400 team of Wemhoff, Secrest, Uhlenkott and Lorentz shattered the school record 3:30.37 set by Shane Gehring, McWilliams, Lockett and Alan Uhlon in 1995. They set the new record of 3:23.75 at the Meet of Champions on May 2.
For the girls team Sydney Shears broke her own 800 meter record of 2:24.42 set at State last year. She broke it a couple of times with the last coming at state this year at 2:16.99.
Shears also broke the 1600 meter record more than once this year. Chaye Uptmor set the old record of 5:31.30 on May 4, 2017. Shears broke the record first at the Meet of Champions on May 2 and then broke it again at State as she lowered the record to 5:21.95.
Sage Elven broke the discus record twice this year. At the opening meet of the season at Kamiah she broke Jenna Goeckner’s record of 129’6½” set at State in 2001 with a mark of 135’11”. At State May 17, she shattered her own record with a toss of 142’11”.
Sierra Oliver tied the girls pole vault record of 7’6” set by Lauren Merrill in 2005 at the Regional Meet last year. This year she broke it several times. The first time came on April 9 when she cleared 7’9”. On April 30 at the non-Meet of Champions she cleared 8’0” and 2 days later at the Meet of Champions she cleared 9’0”.
The girls medley relay team of Alli Geis, Aubree Rehder, Kennedy Riener and Shears broke the old school record of 1:54.5 when they ran 1:54.31 at the Regional Meet. The old record had been set in 1977 by Cindy Schultz, Carrie Riener, Barbie Crea and Janice Uhlorn.
Elizabeth Severns established the javelin record at the Lewiston Invitational. Hailey Hanson broke it at the Kendrick Invite. Severns broke it again 3 days later and finally Hanson set the current record of 102’11” at the Meet of Champions.
We would imagine the only year more school records were set or broken in the same year would’ve been the first years Prairie had track teams.
