Zephyrs win 1, tie 1, lose 5
The Camas Prairie Zephyrs American Legion baseball team had a rough week last week as they won 1 game, tied 1 and lost 5 games.
On Tuesday, June 11 they traveled to Orofino where they lost 7-15 and 1-14 to the Orofino Merchants. On Thursday, June 13 they traveled to Nampa for a Wooden Bat Tournament that lasted until Sunday, June 16. They lost to the Spring Creek (NV) Snowcocks 10-15 on Thursday, June 13. On Friday they were shut out by the Fruitland Grizzlies 0-14. On Saturday they tied the Phantom 8-8 and lost to the Boise Storm 2-9. They closed out the tournament with a 6-3 win over the Idaho Falls Grizzlies.
At Orofino
In the opener at Orofino the Zephyrs had 2 first inning baserunners but failed to score. In the bottom of the first the Merchants scored 4 runs against starter Thayn Williams. 3 singles, 2 walks and an error contributed to the scoring.
Neither team scored in the second inning.
The Zephyrs got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Ray Holes led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. Cody Klement walked. Holes then scored on an error at short on a steal by Klement. Noah Behler was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third. Carter Shears singled to right to score Klement. Talum Brown then singled to right to load the bases. Williams drew a bases loaded walk to score Behler and make it 3-4.
Orofino responded to the Zephyrs scoring with a 7 run bottom of the third. 2 walks, 5 singles, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly led to the runs that gave Orofino a 3-11 lead.
The Zephyrs bounced back with 4 runs in the fourth. Collin Ray led off with a walk. Holes followed with a single to left. An error on the play moved the runners to second and third. JT Jackson singled to left to score Ray. Klement walked to load the bases. Eli Hinds then singled to right to score both Holes and Jackson. Klement advanced to third on the throw home. The Zephyrs then pulled off a double steal as Hinds stole second, drawing a throw, and Klement stole home. That cut the lead to 7-11.
That turned out to be the last scoring for the Zephyrs. Orofino added 3 more runs in the fifth and 1 more in the sixth. 4 walks and 3 singles led to the 3-run fifth and a walk and 2 singles led to the run in the sixth.
Williams pitched the first 3 innings allowing 11 runs on 8 hits with 6 walks. Jackson pitched the final 3 innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 3 strikeouts and 6 walks.
The Zephyrs had 8 hits led by Holes who had a double and 2 singles. Hinds had a single and 2 RBI. Jackson and Shears each had a single and an RBI. Klement and Brown each had a single.
The Zephyrs had their only lead of the day in the second game as they scored a run in the top of the first. After that it was all Orofino as they ended the game after 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule.
Cody Kaschmitter drew a 1-out walk in the first inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored when Klement singled to left. Klement’s single turned out to be the Zephyrs only hit of the game.
Orofino scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first without benefit of a hit as Levi McElroy struggled with his command. He gave up 4 walks and hit 2 batters. An error also contributed to the scoring.
The Zephyrs went down in order in the second.
A double and 2 deep fly balls led to a run for Orofino in the second inning.
The Zephyrs had 3 baserunners via walks in the third inning but a caught stealing, fly out and ground out ended the threat.
Things fell apart for the Zephyrs in the bottom of the fourth as Orofino scored 9 runs. McElroy had settled down the previous 2 innings but the wildness came back in the fourth as he walked 4 batters, hit 2 others and gave up a single. Josh Gardner took over with 5 runs scored and nobody out and gave up a walk, 2 singles and a walk as Orofino scored 4 more in the inning.
The Zephyrs went down in order in the fifth and the game ended.
McElroy pitched 3+ innings and allowed 10 runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 10 walks.
Gardner came on in the middle of the fourth inning and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks.
Klement had the Zephyrs only hit and RBI.

At Nampa Wooden Bat Tournament
Vs. Spring Creek, NV
Against the Spring Creek, NV Snowcocks the Zephyrs held a 10-6 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth and then gave up 9 runs to lose after 6 innings due to time limit.
The Zephyrs had a 2-out rally in the first inning. Holes was hit by a pitch to lead off the game but a double play cleared the bases. Klement then drew a walk and stole second. Hinds followed with a single to right that scored Klement. Jackson drew a walk. Hinds and Jackson pulled off a double steal and then Hinds scored on a balk to make it 2-0.
Behler started on the mound for the Zephyrs and gave up a leadoff single. After an out he gave up another single and then hit a batter. A groundout to second scored a run.
After the Zephyrs went down in order in the second, the Snowcocks took their first lead. A pair of 1-out singles were followed by an error that allowed the tying run to score. Another error and a groundout led to 2 more runs scoring.
The Zephyrs bounced back in the third with a 6-run inning. Holes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. An error allowed Ebert to reach first with Holes moving to second. After an out, Hinds reached on an error with Holes scoring. Ebert moved to third and Hinds to second on the play. Jackson singled to short right field to score Ebert with the tying run. Shears reached on an error as Hinds scored the go-ahead run.. Williams reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Gardner was hit by a pitch to score Jackson. McElroy sacrificed to score Shears and advance the other two runners. A balk then scored Williams with Gardner moving to third. That gave the Zephyrs an 8-4 lead.
Behler worked around an error and a single to keep the Snowcocks scoreless in the bottom of the third.
The Zephyrs added a pair of runs in the fourth for a 10-4 lead. Ebert reached on an error and Klement singled to left. A groundout by Hinds moved the runners up a base each. Ebert then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Jackson. Shears then double to center to score Klement.
Spring Creek scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to cut their deficit to 4 runs. The first 5 hitters all reached base on 2 walks and 3 singles with 2 runs scoring. Behler then got out of the inning with a fly ball out and 2 strikeouts.
A leadoff walk by Gardner and a single to left by McElroy didn’t lead to any runs as the Zephyrs took a 4-run lead into the bottom of the fifth.
An error opened the inning and was followed by a walk and hit batsman to load the bases. Ebert then came in to pitch and gave up a 2-run single to center. 2 walks forced in another run. After a strikeout, another walk tied the game. A single to left then scored the go-ahead run. 2 more walks forced in 2 more runs. An error allowed another run to score. After a strikeout, another walk forced home another run. That gave Spring Creek a 10-15 lead. The time limit was reached during the inning giving the Snowcocks the win.
Behler pitch 4+ innings allowing 9 runs on 8 hits with 7 strikeouts, 3 walks and 3 hit batsmen. Ebert pitched 1 inning allowing 6 runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts and 6 walks.
The Zephyrs had 6 hits. Shears had a double and 2 RBI. Jackson had a single and 2 RBI. Hinds had an RBI single and Klement, Williams and McElroy each had a single.

Vs. Fruitland
Fruitland dominated the game on Friday as they scored 5 runs in the first and 9 in the second while allowing just 3 singles to the Zephyrs.
Ebert had a single in the first inning but was the only baserunner.
Klement started in the mound and gave 4 walks and 2 singles before getting an out on a fielder’s choice. A double play grounder to short got him out of further damage in the 5-run first inning.
Brown took over on the mound in the bottom of the second and hit a batter then gave up a run-scoring double. After getting 2 outs, he gave up 2 walks, 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a triple as the Grizzlies put 9 runs up against him.
Bransford went in to pitch in the third inning and got the Grizzlies out in order.
The Zephyrs picked up their other two singles in the fifth as Shears led off with a single and Ray later singled with 2 outs.
Klement gave up 5 runs on 2 hits with 4 walks in 1 inning pitched. Brown pitched 1 inning and gave up 9 runs on 6 hits with 1 strikeout, 3 walks and a hit batsman. Bransford pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing no runs on 1 hit with 1 strikeout, 1 walk and 1 hit batsman. He was taken out with 2 strikes as he reached the pitch limit where he could come back to pitch the next day. Gardner came in and threw 1 pitch to get the final out on a strikeout.
Ray, Ebert and Shears each had a single for the Zephyrs.

Vs. Mountain Home
The game on Saturday against the Mountain Home Phantoms resulted in a rare baseball tie due to the time limit.
The Phantoms got on the board first with 2 runs in the bottom of the firsts. Williams started on the mound and hit the first batter. An error and then a single followed with the first run scoring on the single. A second run scored as the Zephyrs converted a double play.
The Zephyrs came back to tie it in the second. With 1 out, Jackson was hit by a pitch. Williams and Ray each singled to load the bases. After a second out, Holes drew a walk that scored Jackson with the first Zephyr run. Ebert then reached on an error as Williams scored to tie the game.
In the third inning Williams gave up a leadoff single then got out of the inning with 3 straight outs.
The Zephyrs took their first lead in the third inning. Behler was hit by a pitch with 1 out. Jackson singled to left and Williams beat out a bunt to load the bases. Ray drew a walk to score Behler with the go-ahead run. A triple steal resulted in another runs as Jackson stole home with Williams and Ray stealing third and second respectively. Williams then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by McElroy.
Holes then reached on an error with Ray scoring to make it 6-2.
The Phantoms scored in the bottom of the inning on a walk, groundout and single to make it 6-3.
Neither team scored in the fourth.
The Phantoms took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with 4 runs. 2 singles and an error led to 1 run scoring. After a groundout, another grounder led to another run. A caught stealing was the second out. Williams then gave up a single and 3 straight walks as the Phantoms took a 6-7 lead.
In the sixth Holes led off with a walk. After an out, Kelement walked. After a second out a wild pitch moved up the runners to second and third. Behler then reached on an outfield error with both runners scoring for an 8-7 lead.
Bransford came in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth. A walk, an error and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 8-8. Bransford then got a strikeout to end the game on the time limit.
Williams pitch 5 innings allowing 7 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts, 5 walks and a hit batsman. Bransford pitched 1 inning allowing 1 unearned run on no hits with 1 walk and 1 strikeout.
The Zephyrs had 4 hits, all singles. Williams had 2 hits while Jackson and Ray each had 1 hit.

Vs. Boise Storm
In their second game on Saturday the Zephyrs ran into a tough Boise Storm team.
For the first time in the tournament the Zephyrs were the home team but it didn’t help. Boise built a 0-9 lead going into the bottom of the fifth where the Zephyrs scored their only 2 runs.
Jackson started on the mound against Boise and 2 singles and an error led to a Boise first inning run.
The Zephyrs got 1 out singles from Ebert and Klement in the bottom of the first but 2 runners caught stealing killed the threat.
Boise put 5 runs on the board in the second inning. A single, and an error scored 1 run. Another run scored on groundout to first. A walk and 2 more singles scored 2 more runs. Another single and an error scored another run to make it 0-6.
Boise added another run in the third. A single and a hit by pitch started the inning. After a strikeout a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. A fly ball to center saw the runner on third tag up and score before the runner from second was thrown out trying to go to third. That made it 0-7.
The Storm added 2 more runs in the fifth. A 1 out error was followed by a passed ball that moved the runner to second. A single then scored the run. After a second out, another single scored Boise’s 9th run of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth Shears led off with a double to center. Jackson followed with a single. After 2 strikeouts, Holes doubled to left to score both baserunners and kept the Zephyrs from getting shut out.
Neither team scored in the final two innings. Klement had a lead off single in the 6th but wound up stranded. The Zephyrs went down in order in the seventh.
Jackson pitched 6 innings and allowed 9 runs, only 3 earned, on 10 hits with 3 strikeouts, 3 walks and 2 hit batsmen. Klement pitched the final inning and gave up no runs on 1 hit with 2 strikeouts.
The Zephyrs had 6 hits led by Klement with 2 singles. Holes had a double and 2 RBI. Shears had a double and Ebert and Jackson each had a single.

Vs. Idaho Falls
The Zephyrs broke their 5-game winless streak by beating the Idaho Falls Grizzlies on Sunday.
McElroy started on the mound for the Zephyrs and was a lot sharper than his previous outing. He hit a batter in the top of the first but got the other 3 hitters out. In the second he gave up a 1-out walk but followed it with 2 strikeouts to get out of the inning. In the third he hit a better and walked another but a caught stealing helped him get out of the inning unscathed.
The Zephyrs finally broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the third. Holes drew a 1-out walk and Williams followed with a single. Hinds was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Holes scored on a groundout by Jackson to make it 1-0.
McElroy ran into control problems in the fourth as he started well with a strikeout. That was followed by a hit batsman. He was caught stealing but then there were 3 straight walks to load the bases. A wild pitch scored the tying run before McElroy got out of the inning with a fly ball out to center.
The Zephyrs took the lead again with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth. Shears walked to lead off the inning. After an out, Ray was hit by a pitch. After a second out, Bransford was put in to pinch run for Ray. Holes singled to left to score Shears. Willaims then singled to score Bransford to make it 3-1.
McElroy walked the leadoff batter in the fifth then was lifted in favor of Ebert. A stolen base and an error moved the runner to third. He scored on a single. After a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, Holes was sent to the mound to relieve Ebert.  Idaho Falls then tied it with a groundout. A double play then got the Zephyrs out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth Jackson had a 1 out single and Behler was hit by a pitch. After a second out, Ebert walked. Ray re-entered the game and drew a bases load walk to give the Zephyrs the lead. Behler scored on a wild pitch and Ebert also scored all the way from second on the same wild pitch to make it 6-3.
The game was called after the inning.
McElroy pitched 4 innings allowing 2 runs on no hits with 7 strikeouts, 6 walks and 3 hit batters. Ebert pitched to 3 batters and gave up a run on 1 hit with 1 walk and 1 hit batsman. Holes pitched 1 innings and gave up no runs on no hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
The Zephyrs had 4 hits led by Williams who had 2 singles and an RBI. Holes and Jackson each had a single and an RBI and Ray had an RBI.
The Zephyrs are now 4-6-1 on the season.
