Sonnen Farms awarded Century Fam status
On June 8, Sonnen Farms, nestled in the
heart of Greencreek, Idaho, was honored with the prestigious Century
Farm Award, recognizing over a century of steadfast dedication to
agriculture, community, and heritage. Established in the late 1800s by
the visionary Edmund Sonnen, who generously founded the Greencreek
School, the legacy of Sonnen Farms spans generations of commitment to
both land stewardship and community spirit. The Century Farm Award honors and recognizes families that have continuously owned and actively farmed the same land for 100 years or more. Dr. Amy Canfield, Idaho State Historical Society Board of Trustees, presented the family with a Century Farm certificate signed by Governor Brad Little, Idaho State Historical Society Executive Director Janet L. Gallimore, and Idaho Department of Agriculture Director Chanel Tewalt; in addition to a commemorative Century Farm sign. The Century Farm and Ranch program in Idaho was established as part of the state's Centennial Celebration in 1990. Since its inception, over 450 farms and ranches across Idaho have been designated as Century Farms or Ranches. This designation serves as a testament to the enduring agricultural heritage and the dedication of families like the Sonnens in preserving their land and way of life for future generations. "The Sonnen family's journey began with a profound commitment to this land," said Steve Sonnen, the current owner of Sonnen Farms. "From the founding contributions of my Great, Great Grandpa Edmund Sonnen and Great Grandpa Joseph Schmidt, to the diligent stewardship of my grandparents and parents, our farm has been a cornerstone of both agricultural excellence and community service." "Our family's story is one of resilience and hard work," remarked Sue Sonnen, Steve's wife and partner in farming. "From our humble beginnings in Germany to establishing roots here in Idaho, farming has been our way of life. We're immensely proud of our heritage and the legacy we continue to build." "We see ourselves as custodians of this land," Steve emphasized. "Our commitment to sustainable farming practices ensures that Sonnen Farms will thrive for generations to come. It's a responsibility we take seriously, knowing that our efforts today shape tomorrow's legacy."
