Zephyrs win 4 of 7
The Camas Prairie Zephyrs won 4 of 7 games
last week. On Tuesday, July 2, they beat the Moscow Blue Devils 16-12
and 20-8 at Moscow. They then played 5
games in 4 days at the Clancy Ellis Tournament in Lewiston. On
Thursday, July 4, they lost to the Orofino Merchants 3-15. On Friday,
July 5 they defeated both Moscow 14-0 and Nampa 8-6. On Saturday, July
6 they lost to the Buhl Tribe 0-11. They closed out the tournament with
a 9-16 loss to the Lewis-Clark Cubs on Sunday, July 7. At Moscow The first game at Moscow was a back and forth affair. The Zephyrs never trailed however they twice lost 6-run leads. The game was scoreless until the top of the third when the Zephyrs plated 4 runs. Chris Schumacher reached on an error to lead off the inning. Schumacher advanced to second on a balk. Ray Holes then reached on an error with Schumacher scoring. Holes wound up at second by the time the play was over. Carter Shears then doubled to right to score Holes and make it 2-0. JT Jackson double to center with Shears having to hold at third as it appeared the fly ball might be caught. Tavan Ebert then singled to left to score Shears with Jackson moving to third. Noah Behler grounded out to second but Jackson was able to score and make it 4-0. The Zephyrs added 2 more runs in the fourth inning. Thayn Williams hit a 1-out single to left and advanced to second on an error after the ball was thrown back to the pitcher. Talum Brown reached on an error at short with Williams scoring. Holes reached on a forceout and then scored when Shears doubled to left. That made it 6-0. Moscow finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. 2 errors, 2 walks, a double and 2 singles enabled the Blue Devils to score 6 runs and tie the game. The Zephyrs answered right back with a big 2-out rally in the fifth. Behler walked to open the inning and Eli Hinds then singled to left. After an out, Williams was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a second out, Holes was hit by a pitch to score Behler. Shears then singled to score both Hinds and Williams. Jackson then triple to score both Holes and Shears. Ebert then reached on an error with Jackson scoring to make it 12-6. Moscow came right back with another 6-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to again tie the game at 12-12. The inning started with a walk, 3 singles and a walk before the first out was recorded. Another 3 singles and a walk led to the scoring and it could’ve been worse except the second out of the inning was made on a throw to the plate. In the sixth neither team had a base runner. In the seventh Shears collected his 5th hit of the game with a 1-out single. Jackson single and Ebert walked to load the bases. Behler then singled to left to score both Shears and Jackson. Hinds was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Levi McElroy was then hit by a pitch to force in Ebert and then Williams walked to force in Behler and make it 16-12. The Zephyrs were able to work around a single and an error in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the win. McElroy started on the mound and gave up no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings with 1 strikeout and 3 walks. Brown went to the mound to start the third inning and gave up 6 runs on 3 hits with 3 walks. Only 1 of the runs was earned. Behler came in to get the final out of the fourth inning then struggled in the fifth as he gave up 6 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks. Jackson came in to get the final out of the fifth and then pitched the final 2 innings allowing 0 runs on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts while picking up the win. The Zephyrs had 12 hits led by Shears who was 5 for 5 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI. Jackson had a triple, double and a single and 2 RBI. Behler had a single and 2 RBI. Ebert and Williams each had a single and an RBI. Holes and McElroy each had an RBI. The second game saw the only time the Zephyrs trailed during the day. The Zephyrs got off to a good start as Holes reached on an error to start the game and Shears followed with a walk. Shears was forced at second by Jackson with Holes moving to third. Holes scored on a groundout by Ebert with Jackson moving to third. Jackson scored on a steal of home and then Behler walked. Josh Gardner then doubled to left to score Behler and make it 3-0. Ebert started on the mound for the Zephyrs and ran into trouble in the bottom of the first. He gave up a run on 2 walks and 2 hit batters. Another walk forced home a second run before he got an out. After 2 more bases loaded walks, Williams was brought in to pitch and gave up another walk to make it 3-5 before getting out of the inning with a strikeout and fly out. In the second inning the Zephyrs started the inning well and Williams walked and Schumacher was hit by a pitch. A double play followed. Shears continued his hot hitting with a single to right but the inning ended without any scoring. An error, 2 singles and a walk led to 2 more Moscow runs in the second inning as the Blue Devils took a 3-7 lead. In the third inning the Zephyrs took back the lead in a big way as they exploded for 10 runs. Hinds started the inning off with a single down the first base line. Behler followed with a single and Gardner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. McElroy hit a pop fly that fell in short left field for a single to score Hinds. Williams singled to right to score Behler. Schumacher was hit by a pitch to score Garder. Holes singled to left to score McElroy and tie the game at 7-7. Shears then singled to left to score Williams and give the Zephyrs the lead. Jackson then singled to left to score both Holes and Schumacher. After the first out of the inning Shears and Jackson pulled off a double steal. Behler then singled to left to score both runners and make it 12-7. Gardner single and McElroy walked to load the bases. Williams executed a squeeze bunt that scored Behler to make it 13-7. In the bottom of the inning Williams loaded the bases with 2 outs on a walk and 2 hit batsmen before getting out of the inning with a ground out to short. The Zephyrs added a run in the fourth as Holes and Collin Ray each singled with Holes advancing to third. Holes scored on a sacrifice fly by Jackson to make it 14-7. Williams held Moscow scoreless in the bottom of the inning. The Zephyrs went down in order in the fifth. Garder came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth and worked around a single, error and walk that loaded the bases with 1 out. He then got out of the inning on an infield fly and a strikeout. In the sixth the Zephyrs loaded the bases on a walk to Schumacher and a single each by Holes and Ray. Jackson then triple to right to score all three baserunners. After an out, Behler doubled to right to score Jackson. After a second out, McElroy walked. Behler scored on a passed ball. McElroy stole second and then came all the way to the plate on an error on the attempted pickoff. That gave the Zephyrs a 20-7 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th. In the bottom of the sixth Moscow’s leadoff hitter singled then was caught stealing. After 2 walks, Gardner recorded a strikeout for the second out. A single scored the runner from third but the game then ended as a runner was thrown out at third on the play. Ebert pitched ½ of an inning and gave up 5 earned runs on 1 strikeout, 5 walks and 2 hit batters but no hits. Williams pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts, 4 walks and 2 hit batsman. Gardner pitched the final 2 innings and gave up 1 run on 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks. The Zephyrs had 17 hits led by Behler who had a double and 2 singles and 4 RBI. Holes had 3 singles and an RBI. Jackson had a triple and a single and 5 RBI. Gardner had a double and a single and an RBI. Shears had 2 singles and an RBI. Ray had 2 singles. Williams had a single and 2 RBI. McElroy had a single and an RBI. Hinds had a single. Schumacher had an RBI. Clancy Ellis Tournament at Lewiston against a tough Orofino team that
had already beaten them twice. This time was no different.Vs. Orofino McElroy started on the mound for the Zephyrs and gave up 4 runs in the first inning on 2 walks, 2 hit by pitches, a single and an error. The Zephyrs came back in the bottom of the first to get within 1 run. Williams led off with a single and Shears walked. After a popup to the shortstop, Evert flew out to deep center and Williams and Shears were both able to score as the Merchants threw the ball around. Behler reach on an error and Ray walked. Behler was able to steal third and then stole home to make it 3-4. However that would be the Zephyrs final run of the game. In the second inning McElroy gave up another run on a single, hit by pitch and sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the second Schumacher, Williams and Shears all walked with 1 out to load the bases. However a double play then got Orofino out of the inning. In the third McElroy pitched around an error and a walk with the with the help of a double play grounder. Orofino had a huge 4th inning as they scored 10 runs. McElroy was taken out after Orofino scored their 7th run of the inning on a bases loaded walk. Brown came in to pitch and got an out before giving up 2 singles, a walk and a double for 3 more runs before getting out of the inning. Neither team scored the rest of the way as Orofino won in 5 innings on the 10-run mercy rule. McElroy gave up 13 runs in 3 ½ innings on just 4 hits with 3 strikeouts, 6 walks and 4 hit batters. Brown pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits with 1 walk. Gardner got the final out on a strikeout. The Zephyrs had just 2 hits, a single each by Williams and Ebert. Moscow For the third time within 3 days the Zephyrs beat Moscow.Behler pitched a 5-inning, complete game, 2-hit shutout with 6 strikeouts and no walks. Meanwhile the Zephyrs had 3 big innings on the offensive side. Williams led off the game by reaching on a dropped fly ball. He wound up going all the way to third on a throwing error. Shears then singled to right to score Williams. Jackson forced out Shears at second. Ebert walked and after a second out, Ray walked to load the bases. McElroy walked to scored Jackson. Hinds reached on a dropped fly ball in center with Ebert and Ray both scoring to make it 4-0. Behler gave up a 1-out single in the bottom of the first them got 2 strikeouts to get out of the inning. The Zephyrs had a single each by Williams and Jackson in the second inning but double play helped get Moscow out of the inning. Behler worked around a 2-out error in the bottom of the second by getting a popup for the third out. In the top of the third Behler walked with 1 out and Gardner went in to courtesy run. Gardner stole second. Ray then reached on an error but Gardner was thrown out trying to score. McElroy walked and Hinds singled to left. An error on the play allowed Ray to score and the other two runners to advance to second and third. Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Williams was walked to score McElroy. Shears singled to right to score both Williams and Brown and make it 9-0. Behler gave up a 2-out single in the bottom of the inning but struck out the other 3 hitters he faced. In the fourth Behler hit a 1-out double to center. Ray sacrificed Behler over to third. Schumacher then singled to left with Behler scoring. Hinds reached on an error at third with Schumacher scoring. Brown drew a walk and Williams then reached on an error with Hinds scoring. A double by Shears scored both Brown and Williams and made it 14-0. Behler got through the 4th with only a 2-out error putting a man on. Schumacher got a 2-out single to left in the fifth but was stranded. Behler put the side out in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the ball game. The Zeohyrs had 11 hits in the game led by Shears who was 4 for 4 with a double and 5 RBI. Schumacher had 2 singles and an RBI. Jackson had a pair of singles. Behler had a double. Williams had a single and an RBI. Hinds had a single and McElroy had an RBI. Zephyrs 4 0 5 5 0—14 11 2 Moscow 0 0 0 0 0— 0 2 9 Vs. Nampa The Zephyrs beat the Nampa Braves for their second win on Friday with a late rally after falling behind 1-4.The Zephyrs took the lead with a first inning run. Williams led off with a single to left. He was forced at second by Shears. Jackson walked and Ebert singled to load the bases. Behler singled to left to score Shears. Jackson started on the mound and hit the first batter he faced. A sacrifice bunt and an error allowed the initial runner to advance to third. He then scored on a sacrifice fly to tie the game. McElroy walked to lead off the second inning. A groundout and a double play ended the threat. A 2-out error in the bottom of the second put the baserunner on second. He scored on a single to give Nampa the lead. Shears reached on an error to start the third inning but a double play and a lineout ended the threat. In the bottom of the third a leadoff double led to another run as consecutive groundouts moved the runner to third and then to home. The Zephyrs went down in order in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth a 1 out hit batsman and a 2-out double led to another run and a 1-4 Nampa lead. The Zephyrs again went down in order in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth Nampa loaded the bases with a single and 2 hit batsman with 1 out. A grounder to third was then turned into a third to home and back to third double play to end the inning. Shears led off the sixth with a double to right. Shears then tagged and went to third on a fly ball to center. Ebert doubled to left to score Shears. A single to left by Behler scored Ebert to cut the lead to 3-4. Nampa led off the sixth with a single but a caught stealing and 2 groundouts ended the threat. In the seventh Schumacher walked to lead off the inning. After an out, Shears singled to center. Jackson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ebert grounded out to short with Schumacher scoring the tying run on the play. Shears moved to third and Jackson to second. An error at short on a groundball by Behler allowed both Shears and Jackson to score with Ebert going to third and Behler to second. Ray hit a squeeze bunt to score Ebert. Hinds then double to left to score Behler and put the Zephyrs up 8-4 going into the bottom of the seventh. Jackson, who had started the game on the mound, was still pitching in the seventh. He hit the first batter then gave up a single. The runner advanced to third and the hitter advanced to second on the throw to third. A groundout scored a run. The next batter struck out. A single scored another run to make it 6-8. A double saw the baserunner only make it to third. Jackson got the next batter to ground out to short to end the game. Jackson pitched all 7 innings and allowed 6 runs on 10 hits with 3 strikeouts and 5 hit batters. The Zephyrs had 8 hits led by Behler who had 2 singles and 4 RBI. Ebert had a double and a single and 2 RBI. Shears had a double and a single. Hidns had a double and an RBI. Williams had a single and Ray had an RBI. Buhl Tribe In Saturday’s game against Buhl the Zephyrs gave up 7 first inning runs and never were able to get any offense going.4 walks, 4 singles, a hit batsman and an error led to Buhl’s 7 first inning runs against Williams. Despite the rocky start, Williams pitched all 4 innings as the Zephyrs were getting very short on available pitchers with a game yet to play on Sunday. Ebert got the Zephyrs’ first hit leading off the second inning. Gardner led off the third inning with a hit and Hinds got the third hit in the fifth inning. Williams gave up 11 runs, only 5 earned, on 8 hits with 5 walks and a hit batsman. Zephyrs 0 0 0 0 0— 0 3 4 Buhl 7 0 1 3 x—11 8 2 Vs. LC Cubs In the game against the
Lewis-Clark Cubs on Sunday the Zephyrs outhit the Cubs 12-11 but 9
walks, 2 hit batsmen and 4 errors helped the Cubs win by 7. Cubs
pitching meanwhile gave up just 3 walks.Brown started on the mound for the Zephyrs and gave up 3 runs in the first inning on 2 walks and 3 singles. The Zephyrs came back with a run in the bottom of the first. Holes reached on an error. He then wound up advancing all the way to third on an errant pickoff throw by the pitcher. Holes scored on a groundout by Jackson. The Cubs added 3 more runs in the second inning on 2 singles, 2 walks and a sacrifice. The Zephyrs got a 2-out single each from Hinds and Gardner in the bottom of the inning but were unable to score. Brown set the side down in order in the third. Jackson had a 2-out single in the third for the Zephyrs but a fly ball then ended the inning. Brown gave up a single and a walk in the fourth but no runs. Behler led off the fourth with a double to right and moved to third on a ground out by Ray. Hinds doubled to center with Behler scoring. Hinds then stole third. After a second out, Brown reached on an error with Hinds scoring to make it 3-6. Brown set the side down in order in the fifth. Behler had a 2-out single in the bottom of the inning but was stranded. In the sixth Brown got an out then hit a batter. After a second he gave up a walk and 2 singles, then hit a batter and was taken out in favor of Gardner. Gardner gave up 2 singles and 2 walks before getting out of the inning as the Cubs scored 6 runs. The Zephyrs bounced back with their own 6-run inning. Hinds led off with a single and Gardner reached on an error. McElroy went in to courtesy run for Gardner. Brown reached on an error with Hinds scoring. Holes then doubled to center to score McElroy. Shears singled on a popup with Brown having to hold up at third. Jackson then grounded into a double play but Brown was able to score and Holes advancing to third. Ebert singles to right to score Holes. Behler walked and Ray hit a bunt single to load the bases. Hinds singled to left with both Behler and Ebert scoring to make it 9-12. The Cubs bounced back with 4 more in the top of the seventh on 3 errors, a walk and a single. In the bottom of the seventh Holes drew a 1-out walk but a strikeout and a groundout ended the game. Brown wound up giving up 11 runs in 5 2/3 innings on 8 hits with 1 strikeout, 6 walks and 2 hit batsmen. Gardner gave up 5 runs on 3 hits with 3 walks in 1 1/3 innings. The Zephyrs had 12 hits led by Hinds who had a double and 3 singles and 3 RBI. Behler had a double and a single. Holes, Jackson and Ebert each had a single and an RBI. Shears and Gardner each had a single. The Zephyrs are now 11-10-1 on the season. They were to play Orofino in a doubleheader at Cottonwood on Tuesday, July 9. They have a double header at the Lewis-Clark Cubs on Friday, July 12 with the first game starting at 5 p.m. Saturday they host the North Idaho Lakers in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. and Sunday they host the Coeur d’Alene Lums in a doubleheader starting at noon. That will complete their regular season.
