To the Library and Beyond The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library extend our sincere appreciation to all the volunteers and other friends who attended our Grand Re-Opening event on 18 July. Our precious children – who are our future – greatly enjoyed Carissa Jones’ many games that she provided for their entertainment. “Volunteering helps us feel happier and increases our social skills.” Our historian, Joan Brown, is an avid reader of Library books and she has agreed to read and evaluate one Library book each week to share with you. During the last four days of July we continue caring for our volunteers; we might also remember to appreciate American artists, read an almanac, and make ourselves aware of the mental health of minorities. Greeting the first three days of August, we begin a “month-long celebration [of romance novels and the nurturing effect of love stories that encourage] empathy, diversity, and empowerment.” Library personnel may also practice enhanced awareness of financial matters. Sunday 28 July we celebrate Buffalo Soldiers Day to honor the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of the first peacetime all-Black Army regiment. It is also World Nature Conservation Day. Monday 29 July is National Camera Day, a good time to snap a few photos to remember. Tuesday 30 July is National Paperback Book Day. Wednesday 31 July is National Jump For Jelly Beans Day. If you prefer you may substitute Raspberry Cake or even your favorite ‘Mutt.” Thursday 1 August is Cycle To Work Day. Friday 2 August is National Coloring Book Day, so dig out your crayons and create a masterpiece. Saturday 3 August is National Watermelon Day. In 2022 Prairie Community librarians loaned 2,073 items; in 2023 [January through September] we welcomed 1,735 visitors to the Library. The community is our purpose, and the volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library dedicate all our efforts to serving the community. We aspire to structure all our directives to achieve that end. Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful and committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service. Thank you all! | COTTONWOOD
