To the Editor,
Let’s discuss collateral damage from the Idaho Legislature’s extreme abortion ban. Without question, the ban profoundly affects women of reproductive years. The impact can also affect women outside reproductive years. Idaho has lost 22% of its obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) specialists as a result of this legislation. I use an example of ovarian cancer. It is a disease without diagnostic tests or regular screenings. Symptoms are usually the first indication of the disease. Waiting for weeks/months for an OB/GYN appointment or travelling out of state for treatment can be dangerous and stressful for the patient and loved ones. That’s COLLATERAL DAMAGE. The exodus of physicians is not over. In March, 2024, the Idaho Statesman newspaper cited difficulties recruiting Emergency Room and primary care physicians due to fear of litigation, jail time and potential loss of license. Brian Whitlock, President of the Idaho Hospital Association states, “Idaho medical schools are not filling their enrollments and residency openings due in part to student wariness. That’s COLLATERAL DAMAGE. Idaho’s foster care system is struggling to provide care for children. In 2022, the Department of Health data showed 33% of elective abortions performed were on women covered by governmental Medicaid. That means taxpayers potentially will pay to care for 33% more children. I have fostered two children. Both were severely damaged from parental physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Knowing both histories, they were born from unwanted pregnancies. That’s COLLATERAL DAMAGE. I firmly support reproductive rights and all women’s healthcare. As I’ve referenced, ultimately every Idahoan of both genders will experience worsening access to physician services. THAT’S COLLATERAL DAMAGE.
