Pirates win 44-8 at Deary
The Prairie football team opened their season with a 44-8 win at Deary on Friday, August 30.
The Prairie defense dominated the Mustangs, holding them to just 110 yards of offense with 72 of those coming on their final drive against the JV defense that led to Deary’sDylan Uhlenkott runs untouched into the end zone for the first of his 3 touchdowns at Deary. only touchdown.
The Pirates received the opening kickoff and looked like they might score on the first play but quarterback Briggs Rambo’s pass was just underthrown enough that Matt Wemhoff couldn’t come up with the catch.
Prairie managed a first down on fourth and 1 at the Deary 44 when Rambo gained 3 yards on a sneak. After Rambo picked up 6 years on a keeper, Dylan Uhlenkott took over. He rushed 4 straight times. He was stopped on the first attempt for no gain but then ripped off runs of 12 and 14 yards to set up first and goal at the 9. He then scored on a pitch to the right on the next play. The 2-point pass attempt fell incomplete leading Prairie with a 6-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff Levi Gehring wasn’t supposed to try an onside kick but that’s how it worked out with Levi McElroy recovering the ball at the 50.
This time Rambo and Wemhoff connected for a 40 yard pass play down the left side. Chris Schumacher scored on a counter on the next play. Uhlenkott added the 2-pointer on a cutback run to give Prairie a 14-0 lead.
Deary got their first offensive possession but was unable to move the ball and had to punt. The punt only went 12 yards before going out of bounds as Prairie took over on their own 49.
After 2 incomplete passes and a 3 yard loss on a run, Prairie faced fourth and 13 from their own 46. Rambo connected with Wemhoff for 25 yards and a first down at the Deary 29.
A false start and a 4 yard loss pushed them back to the 38. Uhlenkott gained 15 on the next play to se tup third and 3 at the 23. Rambo than completed a screen pass to Schumacher on the left side and Schumacher broke through for a touchdown. Rambo ran in the 2-pointer to make it 22-0 with 4:01 still left in the first quarter.
Deary then mounted their first threat of the game as they picked up their initial first down of the game on a 28 yard run to the Prairie 22.
The threat died 3 plays later on third and 11 when McElroy intercepted a pass at the 8 and returned it to the Prairie 40.
After an incomplete pass, Uhlenkott swept around right end and broke loose for a 60 yard scoring run. Levi Gehring ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 30-0 lead.
Deary turned the ball over on downs on their next possession as a fourth down pass went long.
Prairie took over on the Deary 49. Uhlenkott gained 18 on the first play. Gehring then ran twice for 8 total yads. Schumacher picked up 6. McElroy, in at quarterback in the second quarter, then gain 3 to the Deary 14. On the next play Schumacher scored on a 14 yard burst up the middle. The 2-point try was stopped but Prairie was now up 36-0.
Deary got a first down on a pass interference penalty on their next possession but that was the only play they gained yardage as they were forced to punt on fourth and 17 from their own 38.
Prairie took over at their own 25. They overcame a false start and a holding penalty as they drove down the field. Gehring did the bulk of the ball carrying as he gained 25 yards on 5 carries. He then caught a screen pass for another 7 yards to the Prairie 47.
After a 1 yard gain, McElroy connected with Rambo for 9 yards. Schumacher then burst up the middle for 33 yards to set up first and goal at the 10. Uhlenkott scored on a run to the left on the next play. McElroy then passed to Phil Schwartz who made a great catch in the back of the end zone for the 2-pointer and a 44-0 lead.
Deary fumbled the ball back on the ensuing kickoff return with Ashton Martin recovering the ball at the Deary 35. Gehring picked up 9 yards and Schumacher 4 yards for a first down but then the half ended.
The entire second half was played with a running clock.
Deary received the second half kickoff and fumbled on third down with Schumacher recovering at the Deary 31.
Prairie had a fumble themselves that cost them 19 yards and they had to punt.
Deary picked up a first down but then were stopped by the Prairie defense for 1 yard on fourth and 4. Prairie took over at the Deary 47.
Schumacher picked up a first down with a 13 yard run but a sack and then an interception turned the ball back to Deary at the Mustangs’ 7 yard line.
On fourth and 10 Deary had to punt with Prairie taking over at the 18 after an 11 yard punt.
Lane Mader picked up 8 yards to the 10 on the first play then the JV offense started going the wrong direction. A fumble cost them 7 yards then quarterback Kade Quintal was sacked on fourth down giving Deary the ball at their own 28.
Against the JV defense Deary was then able to mount their only scoring drive of the game. A 26 yard pass completion was followed by runs of 12, 20 and 13 yards to move the ball to the 2 yard line. They scored on the next play with just 35 seconds left in the game. They added the 2-pointer to make the final score 44-8.
Prairie gained 211 yards rushing on 39 attempts led by Uhlenkott who had 135 yards on just 10 carries. Schumacher added 89 yards on 7 carries and Gehring had 50 yards on 10 carries.
Rambo completed 3 of 9 passes for 88 yards while McElroy completed 2of 3 passes for 16 yards with 1 interception. Quintal was 0 for 1 passing.
Wemhoff caught 2 passes for 65 yards. Schumacher caught 1 for 23. Rambo caught 1 for 9 and Gehring caught 1 for 7 yards.
Deary had 83 yards rushing led by TJ Beyer who had 57 yards on 12 carries. Deary passers were 2 for 9 for 27 yards and an interception.
Prairie is now 1-0 on the season. This week they travel to Fruitland where they will play Valley of Hazelton, a school they’ve played 3 times in the state playoffs and once before in the regular season. They are 2-2 so far against the Vikings, 1-1 in state championship games. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
