Pirates lose to Valley
The Prairie football team scored the first and last touchdowns of their game against Valley at Fruitland Friday, Sept. 6, but it was all Valley in between as the Pirates lost 22-52. Matt Wemhoff took a short pass on the second play of the game and went 63 yards for a touchdown.
The game started well for the Pirates as they received the opening kickoff and started at their own 35 after the kick went out of bounds.
After Dylan Uhlenkott picked up 2 yards on first down, quarterback Briggs Rambo tossed a short pass to Matt Wemhoff on the left side. Wemhoff broke 3 tackles and took the ball 63 yards to the end zone. Rambo then passed to Chris Schumacher for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.
Valley then took over at their 43 after a short kickoff and needed 7 plays to cover 57 yards. They overcame a holding penalty with a 34 yard pass completion that set up first and goal at the 3. Two plays later quarterback Josh Hardy scored from the 1. They added the 2-pointer to tie the game.
Prairie was unable to move the ball on their next possession and were forced to punt. Valley took over at their own 37 and need just 3 plays to score the go-ahead touchdown. The score came on a 53 yard burst through the middle by Thomas Vargas. Hardy ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-16.
Prairie again had to punt after 3 plays netted just 3 yards. Valley took over at their own 13 and went 87 yards in 10 plays with Hardy covering the final 22 on a run. The 2-point try came up short but Valley still led 8-22.
On Prairie’s next possession Uhlenkott picked up 16 yards on the first play but then the offense stalled again and Prairie had to punt. Valley took over on their own 17 and 2 plays later scored on an 81 yard pass. They added the 2-pointer for an 8-30 lead.
On Prairie’s next possession they were again forced to punt. A bobbled snap by punter Uhlenkott led to Valley taking over at the Prairie 33.
Prairie was finally able to stop the Valley offense as they stopped Hardy for just 2 yards on fourth and 4.
They took over at their own 25 and Schumacher picked up 12 yards on first down. A holding penalty then wiped out a good gain by quarterback Levi McElroy and Prairie was forced to punt again.
Valley took over at their own 42 and added another 6 points just 10 seconds prior to halftime. Prairie stopped the 2-point run but Valley still held an 8-36 lead at the half.
Prairie had to kick off to start the second half and Valley scored after just 4 plays to extend their lead to 8-44.
Prairie took over after the ensuing kickoff went out of bounds at their own 35. Sticking to the running game the Pirates were able to put together a scoring drive. Uhlenkott picked up 14 yards then Schumacher gained 5. An encroachment penalty gave them another first down. McElroy then picke dup 10 yards for another first down. Schumacher gained 5 and Uhlenkott 6 for a first down at the 20. An 8 yard run by Schumacher and a 2 yard run by McElroy gave Prairie a first and goal at the 3. Schumacher scored on a run up the middle on the next play. The 2-point run was stopped short making it 14-44.
Valley then answered right back with another scoring drive of 72 yards in 8 plays and overcame 2 holding penalties. Hardy ran it in from the 13 and then passed for the 2-poitner to make it 14-52.
Prairie was forced to punt again and Valley then put in their second team offense.
Prairie forced a punt but muffed the return giving Valley the ball at the Prairie 32.
4 plays later though Phil Schwartz, whop had muffed the punt, made up for it by making an interception at the 20 yard line.
An encroachment penalty moved it to the 25. Uhlenkott then gained 6 up the middle for a first down. After a 2 yard loss, McElroy threw a pass toward Wemhoff then bounced off his hands and went right to Uhlenkott for a 31 yard gain to the Valley 40. Levi Gehring picked up 4 yards and Uhlenkott went left for 7 and a first down. Schumacher gained 13 up the middle to move the ball to the 11. McElroy gained 3 and Gehring 5 to move the ball to the 3.
