To the Library and Beyond
This week we have chosen another three books from the “New Arrivals” shelves.  In The Secret Keeper by Beverly Lewis, “Jennifer Burns shocks everyone when she [leaves] her modern life [for] the Old Order Amish world.”  Birds Of East Central Idaho by Hadley B. Roberts “was written” to highlight the “watchable wildlife” in the “upper Salmon River valley.”  New to our Library is Comstock Lode, Louis L’Amour’s “biggest novel of the west.”
Joan has found a book with special significance for her as she, too, lived some of the experiences in the same locales.  In the 2001 publication, Looking For Alaska, Peter Jenkins shares his appreciation of his time in Alaska.  During the mid-1990s in various towns and villages in the 49th State, the author found extremes of remoteness, wildness, and severely cold climate in some areas.  Mr. Jenkins described his visits to several Native American villages including preparations by some participants for the famous Iditarod Dogsled Race.  He included depictions of salmon fishing excursions, whale encounters, and the notorious grizzly and black bear populations there.
In September we may be thinking about fund-raising activities for the Library.  September is Civic Awareness Month.  Sunday 15 September through Tuesday 15 October is Hispanic Heritage Month.
Sunday 15 September is International Dot Day, “a day to connect, collaborate, and create.”The week of 15 through 21 is National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week to promote adult literacy.  On Tuesday 17 September we celebrate Citizenship Day, a day to take pride in saying “I am an American,” and begin Constitution Week, through Monday 23 September.  Friday 20 September is National POW/MIA Recognition Day honoring all Prisoners Of War and those Missing In Action.
In 2023 Prairie Community Library loaned 2,171 items; in 2019 we added 779 items to the Library collection.  “Volunteering is at the very core of being human.”  Volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library are committed to our purpose of serving the community and value integrity as honesty with strong moral principles and moral uprightness.
Congratulations to the families of April Lustig and Allison Pape who won the family tickets to Friday night at the Lewiston Round-Up.  Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.“Volunteering helps us celebrate our gifts by giving something back.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
