To the Library and Beyond
On our “New Arrivals” shelves you will find DK Art School which promises “a course in creative art”; Face To Face With the American West, filled with black and white photos of Native Americans and many other westerners; and Whisker Of Evil, another mystery by Rita Mae Brown with series star, feline “detective,” Mrs. Murphy.
Joan reviewed the compelling book, Idaho Highway Historical Marker Guide, published by the Idaho Transportation Department in 1990.  “Dr. Merle W. Wells (1918-2000)” (Master’s degree in History), was “Idaho’s 1st state archivist, 1st state historian, and 1st state historic preservation officer.”  Sometimes known as a walking encyclopedia of Idaho history, he “composed the majority of the texts with historical information on hundreds of historical marker signs across Idaho.  All major roads and highways in Idaho that have signs are contained in this book; included are descriptions and site locations of each sign.  There are fascinating historical photos of U.S. Highway 95 construction and other photos of stagecoaches, old railroads, ferries and towns.”  [Almost every Idahoan who has marveled at Idaho Historical Markers will appreciate knowing that in addition to the volume in our Library, a copy of this remarkable booklet is currently available as a PDF on the internet.]
September is Classical Music Month.  Some may be seeking recommendations for grant applications.  “Volunteering helps us explore our interests and improves our self-esteem.”  On Sunday 22nd we may enjoy Dear Diary Day on the First Day Of Autumn.  On Monday 23rd we celebrate the day in 1806 when William Clark, Meriwether Lewis and the Corps of Discovery completed their journey.  Tuesday 24th is National Punctuation Day (Who remembers Victor Borge?).  The 24th – 30th is Banned Books Week.  Wednesday 25th is National Comic Book Day.  Friday 27th is Library Book Club Day and Banned Websites Awareness Day.
In 2021 Prairie Community Library served 2,075 visitors; in 2023 we loaned 1,484 children’s items.  “Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action.”  Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com.  The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library hold continuing conversations about the organization’s direction and priorities.  Please attend any Board Meeting to recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
