Lady Pirates lose to Potlatch, win Silver Bracket at Lewiston Tournament
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of 4-set league matches on the road last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, they traveled to Troy and lost 21-25, 20-25, 26-24, 17-25. Then on Thursday, Sept. 12, they traveled to Lapwai and won 25-13, 19-25, 25-17 and 25-23.
At Troy
The opening set at Troy started like a lot of Prairie matches with Troy do as Prairie fell behind 0-5. The Pirates were able to get back within 2 at 14-16 after 2 aces by Hailey Hanson and a kill by Lexi Schumacher. Hailey Hanson spikes the ball at Troy as Sydney Shears and Tamden Pecarovich get ready to play defense.After a pair of sideouts they got within 1 at 16-17 on an ace by Mia Anderson.
Troy then pushed the lead back to 6 at 18-24. Prairie fought off 3 set points on a block by Hanson, a kill by Kylie Schumacher and an ace by Tamden Pecarovich. Troy then got the set winner to make it 21-25.
Prairie took their first lead of the night at the start of the second set on a kill by Kylie Schumacher and an ace be Pecarovich. After a sideout, Hanson and Lexi Schumacher each scored a kill for a 4-1 lead.
Troy then got a huge serving run from Nicole Hunter who served Troy to a 4-11 lead. The best Prairie was able to do the rest of the set was get within 4 at 17-21, 18-22, 19-23 and 20-24. The last on a kill by Kylie Schumacher. A missed serve then ended the set 20-25.
Troy Lead early on in the third set although Prairie was able to tie it at 4 and again at 5.
A kill by Avery Riener for a sideout made it 6-7. Lexi Schumacher then served 2 aces to give Prairie their first lead at 8-7. A kill by Ellie Nuxoll made it 9-7.
Troy answered and took back the lead at 10-11. A kill each by Kylie Schumacher and Hanson put Prairie back on top 12-11.
Prairie took a 2 point lead at 18-16 on a kill by Kylie Schumacher and again at 19-17 on another kill by Kylie. Troy scored 4 straight for a 19-21 lead.
Troy led 22-24 and it became do or die for Prairie. Lexi Schumacher scored a sideout kill. Hanson served an ace. Lexi scored another kill to make it 25-24 Prairie. Lexi Schumacher then scored on a first touch tip for the set winner.
Prairie was unable to take that momentum into the fourth game as Troy jumped out to a 0-5 lead. Prairie regrouped and got back within 1 at 7-8 on a kill by Nuxoll and an ace by Anderson. They were then able to tie it at 10 on a sideout kill by Lexi Schumacher and then 2 aces by Lexi.
Troy then took the lead and never gave it up as they went on to win by 8.
Lexi Schumacher had 23 kills in the match and 4 aces. Kylie Schumacher had 14 kills. Hanson had 7 kills which includes 3 blocks. She also had an assist and 4 aces. Nuxoll had 5 kills, including a block, plus an assist. Sydney Shears had 4 kills and 3 assists. Pecarovich had 1 kill, 25 assists and 3 aces. Riener had 1 kill and 1 assist. Anderson had 15 assists and 2 aces. Kaylie Lockett had 1 ace.
Prairie won all 3 games in the JV match 25-5, 26-24, 15-13.
Faith Cash served Prairie to a 3-0 lead in the opening game. Troy came back to take a 3-4 lead then Erica Schlader scored a sideout kill.
Halee Rowland then went to the service line and service 14 straight points. She had 8 aces while Nadia Cash scored 4 kills and Avery Kehler scored 2 kills as Prairie took an 18-4 lead.
Troy scored a sideout but Nadia Cash answered with a sideout kill and Kehler then served out the set with 6 straight points. She had 3 aces while Nadia Cash, Beka Schumacher and Schlader each had a kill.
The rest of the match was completely different. The second game went back and forth early on. Troy then put a run together to take a 10-15 lead before bricking a serve. Kehler then served 5 straight for Prairie. Schlader scored a kill then Kehler had 4 straight aces as Prairie took back the lead at 16-15.
Now it was back to the back and forth play of earlier in the set. Prairie took a 22-19 lead after 2 aces by Faith Cash but Troy came back to tie it at 23-23. A kill by Kehler gave Prairie a set point chance but they missed the serve. Faith Cash then scored a kill on a free ball and Beka Schumacher put away the set winning kill.
In the anti-climactic third set, Prairie fell behind -13 but Rowland served 3 aces after a scoring a sideout kill for a 5-3 lead.
Troy took a 6-7 lead but that was their final lead of the match. Nadia Cash scored a kill to tie it and Schlader then served an ace for the lead. Troy was able to tie it at 8 and again at 9 and 12, but never was able to retake the lead.
At 12-12, Kylee Riggers scored a sideout out and Rowland served an ace for set point. A hitting error gave Troy back the serve at 14-13. Riggers then scored the set winning point on a free ball.
At Lapwai
Lexi Schumacher paced the Pirates against Lapwai with 17 kills, a 100% showing from the service line and three aces. Prairie coach Julie Schumacher said Sierra Oliver provided a great game from the back line.
“It was nice to get that win going into the weekend,” Julie Schumacher said. “We’re coming together.”
Prairie is now 2-2 in league play and 5-4 overall counting tournament matches.
