Joan reviewed the book, Give Your Heart To the Hawks, published in 1973.  In this nonfiction work, Winifred Blevins relates an historical account of the early exploration of the American West.  The year after the Lewis-Clark Expedition, exploration of the American West was fueled by European demand for beaver pelts.  Fur companies hired frontiersmen to hunt and trap beaver for their pelts.  These early beaver trappers became the legendary mountain men.  Mr. Blevins portrays the business of the mountain men as beaver trappers, from the beginning to the end of the beaver trade, which lasted 37 years, from 1806 until 1843 when the beaver population was decimated and the European fashion for beaver products declined.  The author depicts the rugged character of the mountain men as well as the annual rendezvous for trading pelts, and friendly and hostile encounters with the various Native American tribes.
