The Prairie football team outlasted C.V. 54-36 at Kooskia Thursday, Oct. 3. The game had been moved up to Thursday due to a shortage of officials. Prairie received the opening kickoff and started at their own 45. Runs of 22 and 9 yards by Dylan Uhlenkott moved the ball to the C.V. 25. Quarterback Levi McElroy ran a quarterback sneak for 3 yards to pick up a first down. Chris Schumacher went up the middle for 10 yards and another first down at the 12. Uhlenkott then had runs of 2 and 6 to move the ball to the 4. He scored on a pitch to the right on the next play. The 2-point try was stopped as Prairie led 6-0. Prairie then kicked off deep the C.V. 35 and Hyson Scott ran the kickoff all the way back to tie the score. C.V. quarterback Tiago Pickering then ran in the 2-point conversion to give C.V. a 6-8 lead. Prairie then took over at their own 36 after C.V.’s kickoff. Prairie faced a third and 10 after a false start penalty and Uhlenkott took a pitch around right end for 20 yards and a first down. McElroy then ran a keeper for 12 yards and another first down. On third and 3, McElroy ran a keeper to the left and picked up 22 yards to set up first and goal at the 3. C.V. tackled Prairie for loss twice setting up fourth and goal at the 9. McElroy then passed to a wide open Levi Gehring in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown. McElroy then ran in the 2 pointer for a 14-8 lead. Prairie kicked off deep again and Pickering took the ball at the C.V. 25 and for the second time in a row, C.V. scored on a kickoff return. Prairie stopped the 2-point try this time to leave the scored tied at 14. C.V. had scored 2 touchdowns and the only time their offense had made it onto the field was for the 2-point tries. Prairie took over at their own 43 after the kickoff. This time the Pirates needed just 1 play to score as Uhlenkott took a pitch and went right then cut back to the left and went 57 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point pass fell incomplete leaving Prairie with a 20-14 lead. This time Prairie went to a squib kick and C.V. couldn’t advance the ball after recovering at their own 37. The Rams picked up 1 first down on a 19 yard run and another on a pass interference penalty. The first quarter ended with C.V. at the Prairie 28. On the first play of the second quarter Pickering’s pass went off the hands of his receiver and Schumacher made the interception at the Prairie 18. McElroy gained 11 to move the ball to the 29. Uhlenkott then went around the right side for 45 yards to the C.V. 26. On third and 10, Uhlenkott went around the left side for 15 yards to the C.V. 11. McElroy ran a keeper up the middle for 6 yards and Schumacher then scored on a run up the middle from the 5. The 2-point pass failed but Prairie now led 26-14. Prairie tried an onside kick, more to keep C.V. from making a big runback than an attempt to get the ball again. C.V. took over at the Prairie 48. They converted a fourth and 12 with a 15 yard run by Pickering. C.V. picked up another first down at the Prairie 22. Then they started moving backwards. A screen pass was stopped for a loss of 5 yards. Pickering was then sacked by Matt Wemhoff for a loss of 10 yards. Pickering was rushed on the next play and wound up completing a pass to one of his linemen. That lost them 12 yards and the 5 yard penalty for an illegal receiver set up fourth and 37. An illegal procedure penalty then made it fourth and 42. C.V. punted from their own 47 and Prairie took over at their own 38. Priarie moved the ball to the C.V. 47 where a fumbled snap led to a 5 yard loss. C.V. jumped offside to erase that loss but Prairie still faced fourth and 11 from the C.V. 47. McElroy’s pass to Gehring fell incomplete and C.V. took over on downs. C.V. was able to move the ball to the Prairie 21 where the half ran out. C.V. received the second half kickoff, another onside attempt as their took over at their own 48. They converted a fourth and 2 with Pickering picking up 6 yards. However on third and 10 at the Prairie 39, Phil Schwartz intercepted Pickering’s pass and returned it to the C.V. 46. McElroy picked up 8 yards and Uhlenkott gained 2 for a first down. McElroy picked up 4 and Uhlenkott went right for 15 for a first down at the 17. McElroy gained 7 and Schumacher 3 to set up third and inches at the 7. McElroy ran a sneak for the first down, picking up 4 yards to the 3. Uhlenkott scored on the next play and ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 34-14 lead. Another short pickoff saw C.V. start at their own 47. A false start penalty had C.V. facing fourth and 11 at their own 46. McElroy batted away pass to give Prairie the ball on downs. McElroy gained 5 and Schumacher 8 for a first down at the 33. After 3 runs netted -1 yards, McElroy completed a screen pass to the left to Schumacher that turned into a 20 yard gain to the 14. Prairie faced a third and 5 as the quarter ended at the C.V. 9. Uhlenkott took a pitch to the right and scored on the first play of the fourth quarter. The 2-point pass failed as Prairie took what looked to be a commanding 40-14 lead with 11:38 to play. C.V. started at the 50 after the kickoff. C.V. scored their first offensive touchdown of the game on a 7 play drive. Pickering ran for 12 yards and passed for 34 on the drive with a Prairie penalty accounting for the other 5 yards. Pickering scored on an 8 yard run and then pass to Scott for the 2-point to make it 40-22. C.V. tried an onside kick but Gehring got the ball at the 50 and returned it to the C.V. 6. Schumacher scored on a run up the middle on the next play. The 2-point try failed as Prairie now led 46-22. Prairie kicked deep wit C.V. taking over at their own 32. Pickering completed a pass for 16 yards to Scott then ran a keeper to the left for 52 yards and a touchdown. He completed a pass to Scott for the 2-point to make it 46-30. Prairie was unable to move the ball on their next possession and turned the ball over on downs at the Prairie 47. Pickering had 3 incomplete passes on the ensuing drive, however, he completed passes of 28 and 19 yards to give C.V. another touchdown. The defense rose up and stopped C.V.’s 2-point run to keep a 2-score lead at 46-36. Schwartz recovered C.V.’s deep kickoff at the Prairie 32. Uhlenkott had a run of 21 yards followed by 11 from Schumacher to move to the C.V. 34. After a false start penalty, Prairie faced fourth and 8 at the 32. McElroy passed to Gehring for a 27 yard gain to set up first and goal at the 5. Uhlenkott then scored and McElroy passed to Briggs Rambo for the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 54-36 lead with 42 seconds left. Uhlenkott then tackled the kick returner for no gain at the C.V. 21. With just seconds left to play, C.V. decided to just run out the clock as the weren’t going to make up an 18 point deficit. Uhlenkott wound up with 255 yards rushing on 28 carries with 5 touchdowns. McElroy gained 89 yards on 19 carries and Schumacher gained 46 on 8 carries as Prairie rolled u 391 yards rushing on 56 attempts. McElroy completed 3 of 8 passes for 56 yards. Gehring caught 2 for 36 and Schumacher 1 for 20. For C.V., Pickering gained 128 yards rushing on 16 attempts. He completed 9 of 24 passes with 2 interceptions for 110 yards. Scott caught 6 passes for 90 yards. Defensively Uhlenkott had 7 tackles and 5 assists. Schwartz had 4 tackles, 2 assists and 1 interception. McElroy had 4 tackles and 2 assists. Wemhoff had 2 tackles, 5 assists and a sack. Schumacher had 2 tackles, 5 assists and an interception. Jake Quintal had 2 tackles and 5 assists. Carter Shears had 1 tackle and 4 assists. Ashton Martin had 1 fumble recovery (of an offensive fumble). Rambo had 1 tackle. Gehring had 2 assists and Lane Mader had 1 assist. Prairie is now 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in league play.
