To the Library and Beyond
This week your friendly Library volunteers would like to be more friendly.  It seems heartless to rush our patrons when they come in near closing time.  We believe we can adjust our shifts to serve you better if you will let us know the weekday and timeframe best suited to your convenience; please let us know.
Joan has reviewed the 1960 book, The Good Years 1900 – 1914, a narrative of American distinction by Walter Lord.  Mr. Lord imparted strong optimism about positive U. S. events and progress during the title years, detailing several historical events and aspects of American culture.  Included are significant chapters: Anti-trust reform during the Teddy Roosevelt administration; Wright Brothers flights; the Great White Fleet that circumnavigated the globe in 1908-1909; and Admiral Peary’s discovery of the North Pole in 1909.  Additional chapters describe upper class society, the women’s suffrage movement, and the first months of Woodrow Wilson’s presidency.  Finally, the book portrays the summer of 1914 in America, as World War I began in Europe.
In November we revel in Picture Books and Native American Heritage.  Nationally we applaud the joy of Family Literacy, access to Scholarships, the pleasure of Novel Writing, and the historical importance of Life Writing.  As we begin the final months of the year, Library volunteers look forward to welcoming additional positive and responsible volunteers to join our weekly efforts.  “Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action.”  On Sunday, November 3 we return to Standard Time.  On Monday we begin Children’s Book Week, with the theme “Every Child A Reader, No Rules, Just Read.”  We encourage everyone to get out and vote on Tuesday.  In 2019 our volunteers loaned 2,228 items, and in 2020 we served 1,772 patrons and other friends.  The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to tracking info that helps us serve you better.
Send your volunteer message to cottonwoodlib@gmail.com. “Volunteering expands our resumes and improves our confidence.”  Please recommend improvements to the Library’s direction, priorities and customer service.  Thank you all!
