Letters
to the editor from this week's Chronicle Letter to the Editor Let’s Bring civility back to politics A recent letter to the editor warned that if proposition #1 passes more democrats would be elected. Idaho has fewer than 13% registered democrats mostly concentrated in the larger cities with a much smaller percentage locally. The notion that democrats would suddenly take over seems like an incredibly unlikely scare tactic. With registered republicans comprising 60% of Idaho voters a more likely scenario is that republicans would continue to get elected but we would a shift in the type of republicans elected. I believe that allowing everyone to vote on the same primary ballot would return us to thepre-2011 days when we elected more traditional republicans- farmers, ranchers and other long-term residents with a stake in their communities. The currently elected republicans in Idaho County who do their jobs, listen to their constituents, and act like decent human beings will very likely continue to be elected. The voters could replace those who push an extreme agenda to take rights away from ordinary Idahoans with people who work to solve real problems. Vote yes for proposition #1 for a government that works for everyone. Norma Staaf Harpster To the Editor You’ve seen the Prop 1 advertisements. “I want to vote for whoever I want.” That is not the reason for proposition 1. Its real purpose is to run ‘one citizen one vote’ into a percentage. “Rank choice voting requires that the voter rank candidates of all parties in order of preference, if no candidate receives more than 50% of first choice votes in the first round of voting, the last place finisher is eliminated, and his votes are moved to the voter’s second choice candidate. This process continues until one candidate receives a majority of votes.” Rank Choice voting is a confusing method set up to be a ridiculously expensive failure. Can you imagine what it will cost to count ballots again and again? $43,000,000 is a recent estimate. Open primary is the Bait. Rank Choice voting is the Hoog. Vote No on Proposition 1.
