Fall Festival at the Holmans'
The Prairie Elementary second and third
grade went on a fall festival field trip to the Holmans’. There were
four stations to rotate thru. At the first station They pressed apple
cider with a turn of the century press. Then they learned about
pasteurization and drank hot cider. At the next station they snacked on
Grandma Marlene’s homemade kettle corn and listened to a book about
Johnny Appleseed. At the third station they milled wheat and cracked
and tasted garbanzo beans. At the fourth station they went on a hay
ride and learned about the various stages of crops planted in the
surrounding fields. To finish off the day they had a foot race to the
pumpkin patch. There were so many, many volunteers involved throughout
the day. We are so grateful for a bountiful harvest and for so many
people sharing their time, children, apples, pumpkins, wheat and
garbanzo beans.
A
couple photos of students with the cider press. One uses a baseball bat
to push the apples into the press while another student turns the crank.
