To the Library and Beyond We continue encouraging patrons to let us know the best day we should remain open later to serve you better. A recent addition to the New Arrival shelves is an historical fiction, The Spear, by Louis de Wohl. Joan’s review: The Walk West, a continuation of Peter Jenkins’ first and best-selling book, A Walk Across America, this 1981 volume details a personal account of walking across the west by the author and his wife, Barbara. The husband-and-wife team began the second half of their walk across America shortly after their marriage. From New Orleans in July 1976 they walked across Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Oregon to the Pacific Coast. Their story includes some people they met along the way as well as problems in cold, snowy weather across Colorado and other western states. They finished their walk at Florence, Oregon on January 18, 1979 after many interesting adventures! During National Scholarship Month we encourage students to take advantage of available college scholarships. It is also Native American Heritage Month, time to “[. . ] celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories; and [we recognize the valuable contributions of all native peoples].” Library volunteers look forward to welcoming additional positive and responsible volunteers to join our weekly efforts. National Young Readers Week is a celebration of the power of reading as well as an encouragement to get our children reading. National Book Award Week focuses on America’s future authors, books, and literature in general. Come in early Tuesday to find three librarians to “High-Five A Librarian.” Tuesday 19 November is the 161st anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. The week before Thanksgiving is National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week and we applaud the generosity of area residents’ contributions to local food banks. "Great acts are made up of small deeds." In 2020 Prairie Community Library loaned 2,178 items; we added 779 items to the library collection in 2019. The volunteers who manage and operate Prairie Community Library aspire to encouraging integrity and visionary thinking among all volunteers.
