The Prairie Pirates outscored Genesee 41-20 in the middle 2 quarters as they went on to beat the Bulldogs 68-54 at Cottonwood Thursday, Jan. 22. The Pirates then held off a furious Genesee fourth quarter rally that cut a 52-26 lead down to 7 at one point in the fourth quarter. Prairie then used solid free throw shooting to hold the Bulldogs at bay and build the lead back to the final 14 point margin. Tyler Crane had a big night scoring for the Pirates with a season high 21 points despite hitting just two 3-pointers. He went 9 for 9 at the free throw line to contribute a big part of Prairie’s 22 for 27 effort at the line for the night. Prairie was 10 for 12 in the fourth quarter as they held off the Genesee rally. Jacob Riener and Matt Baerlocher also hit double figures in scoring with 11 points each while Brent Frei had a season high 8 points, Chad Arnzen scored 7, Jake Chaffee 6 and Jacob Nuxoll 4. Genesee won easily in the JV game, taking Prairie 35-54. Pirates lose to Potlatch Matt Baerlocher suffered through one of his worst shooting nights ever and the Pirates overall struggled from the field as they lost to Potlatch 51-60 at Cottonwood Friday, Jan. 23. Baerlocher connected on just 3 of 20 shot attempts and Potlatch did a good job of shutting off his patented drives to the hoop. Prairie wound up hitting just 15 of 45 shots while the Loggers connected on 18 of 40 attempts. Where the Loggers really killed the Pirates though was at the free throw line where they connected on 22 of 29 attempts with 16 of those free throws being scored in the fourth quarter when the Pirates were attempting to rally. The first quarter was low scoring as each team was feeling their way. Potlatch cashed in a pair of 3-pointers to jump to a 2-8 lead. A free throw and a basket by Jake Chaffee cut the lead to 5-8 at the end of the period. Potlatch pushed the lead to 8-16 in the second period but the Pirates were able to pull within one after forcing several Logger turnovers. Baerlocher scored from 16 feet out and Jacob Riener scored inside then Tyler Crane drained a 3-pointer to make it 15-16. Potlatch answered though with a 2-7 run to end the half. The Loggers built their lead to 9 in the third quarter but Prairie pulled within 7 by the end of the period. Potlatch started the fourth with a 0-6 run to push the lead to 13 and prairie was never able to get any closer than 6 the rest of the way. 3-pointers by Crane and Baerlocher cut the lead to 48-54 with 56 seconds left but Potlatch hit 6 of 8 free throws in the final minute to push the final margin back to 9. Crane wound up leading the Pirates with 13 points, shooting as well as anyone on the squad hitting 4 of 9. Baerlocher scored 11 thanks to 7 in the fourth quarter while Chad Arnzen scored 10, Chaffee 9, Shane Doyle and Mat Forsmann 3 each and Riener 2. Potlatch also controlled the boards, 25-35. Arnzen led the Pirates with 10 rebounds with Chaffee collecting 6 and Baerlocher 5. Baerlocher had 5 assists and 2 steals while Riener also had 2 steals. Prairie was 15 for 45 from the field, 33%, and 16 for 25 at the line while Potlatch was 18 for 40 from the field, 45%, and 22 for 28 at the line. The loss drops Prairie to 12-3 on the season and 5-2 in league play. In the JV game Seth Crane scored 30 points to lead the Pirates to a 70-60 win. Mat Forsmann got Prairie off to a strong start as he was 4 for 4 in the first quarter for 8 points as Prairie took a 17-14 first quarter lead. Crane scored 9 of Prairie’s 10 second quarter points as the Pirates hung on to a 27-25 lead at the half. In the third quarter Sean Daly, Corey Schaeffer and Crane each scored 4 points with Christopher Schumacher adding a 3-pointer as Prairie extended their lead to 46-41. Crane added 12 more in the fourth and Schumacher scored 6 and Kelby Wilson 5 as Prairie led by as many as 15 points before holding on for a 10-point win. Crane was 11 for 21 from the field and 8 for 14 at the line for his 30 points. Forsmann and Schumacher each scored 9 with Schumacher’s total being a career high on 3 for 4 shooting. Wilson added 7 points, while Daly, J.D. Riener and Schaeffer scored 4 each and Kevin Funke scored 3. The JV’s were 22 for 49 from the field and 24 for 36 at the line while Potlatch was 21 for 49 from the field and 14 for 21 at the line. Prairie had a 39-27 rebounding advantage as Crane and Wilson each had 7 rebounds while Funke and Riener had 6 each. Funke, Forsmann and Crane had 3 steals each and Funke had 3 assists. In the C game Prairie lost to Potlatch 33-47.
