Lady
Pirates swept in opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates were swept by St. Maries in a softball doubleheader 1-6 and 4-21 Saturday, March 13 at Lewiston. The opening game started like it was going to be a very competitive game as each team scored a run in the first inning. Prairie pitcher Kayla Holthaus got out of a 1-out bases loaded jam by allowing just 1 run. In the bottom of the inning Maureen Tacke pounded a 2-out double to deep left field and Heather Schierman followed with a single up the middle that scored Tacke to tie the score. That was it offensively for Prairie though as they managed just 2 more hits, a single each by Tacke and Ashley Schaeffer. Consecutive triples by St. Maries in the second inning led to the go-ahead run and after that, Prairie’s defensive mistakes led to 2 unearned runs. In the fourth 3 straight 1-out singles plated a run for St. Maries but an error on what should have been the third out led to two more runs. St. Maries added another run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk. Holthaus pitched all 7 innings for Prairie, allowing 8 hits and 7 walks with 6 strikeouts. Tacke had 2 hits including a double while Schierman and Schaeffer each had a single. The second game started well for the Pirates as Lacey Wargi led off with a home run down the left field line. Holthaus followed with a double to left center and Tacke tripled to the wall in left to make it 2-0 Prairie. Tacke then got doubled off third on a lineout to short by Schierman and that killed the Pirates rally. Schaeffer was the starting pitcher for Prairie in the second game and had a lot of trouble locating the strike zone as she gave up 2 singles and 8 walks before being lifted in favor of Cassie Chandler. Chandler had some trouble her pitching motion as several balks were called before she got it straightened out and wound up walking 2 more hitters before getting the third out. Chandler pitched the second inning before Schaeffer was put back in for the final two innings after working out her control problems. Prairie added 2 more runs in the fourth inning as Schierman reached on an error to lead off the inning. Karel Wassmuth followed with a single to center. Schaeffer picked up an RBI on a grounder to short and Wassmuth scored when Sarah Forsmann reached on a dropped third strike. Prairie wound up with 5 hits in the game. Holthaus had a double and single, Wargi a homer, Tacke a triple and Wassmuth and Lindsey Crea each had a single. St. Maries had 8 hits and benefited from 18 walks and 2 errors. Prairie is now 0-2 on the season.
