Lady Pirates split at Orofino Tournament
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of games at the Orofino Tournament held March 26.
They beat Bonners Ferry 13-2 then lost 5-12 to Priest River.
Kayla Holthaus pitched both games.
In the first game Holthaus allowed just 3 hits and struck out 9 hitters with 4 walks, holding Bonners Ferry to single runs in the fourth and fifth after Prairie had taken a big lead.
Maureen Tacke had 3 hits including a triple with 3 RBI to lead the hitting attack. Natalie Arnzen also had 3 RBI.
Lacey Wargi had a double and Arnzen, Heather Schierman, Meghan VanderPas and Lindsey Crea each had a single.
The game was called after 4½ innings on the 10-run rule.
In the second game errors hurt the Pirates as 6 errors contributed to 8 unearned runs for Priest River.
5 runs in both the second and third innings put the game away for Priest River.
Prairie pounded out 9 hits, all singles. Arnzen had 2 singles while Wargi, Tacke, Schierman, Karel Wassmuth, Ashley Schaeffer, Sarah Forsmann and Crea each had a single.
Coach Travis Mader said they battled well and he was pleased with the way the girls competed against a couple of much larger schools as both Bonners Ferry and Priest River are 3-A schools.
Prairie is 5-5 on the season.

USA volleyball team competes
The Prairie Dawgs USA Volleyball under 17 team formed in December, paying their USA dues, along with joining the Snake River Juniors Volleyball Club in Lewiston and started practice in mid-January.  Members and coaches of the Prairie Dawgs.
They practice once a week with volunteer and IMPACT Certified coaches Tulao Moea'i and Joe Forsmann.
Entering into five USA volleyball tournaments, the team has played in four of the five.  First tournament was March 7th, in St. Maries, where the team got their first taste of club volleyball.  Then off to the Snake River tournament held in Genesee, where improvements were seen.  The third tournament was held in Moscow and this past weekend the Prairie Dawgs traveled to Pullman to play at WSU in their fourth tourney.  The fifth and final tournament will be in Spokane at the Best of the West Tourney on Sunday April 18th.  This tourney is a U18 (under 18 division) with thirty-two U18 teams participating.
Although the Prairie Dawgs are struggling to get in the wins column, they are making great strides to improve their skills on the volleyball court.  These athletes should be commended on their efforts.  All of the players are involved in other spring sports and have made an effort to take these steps to bring their volleyball game to another level.
