Summit girls take second in tourney
Playing in Kamiah’s Invitational Tourney this past weekend, Summit Academy’s elementary school girls’ basketball team won two of their first three games, then lost a tough match to Kamiah sixth in the championship to finish the two day tourney with the Runner-up – second place tourney.
The Summit team, consisting of sixth graders Mary Shears, Liz Pineda, and Jennifer Wemhoff, fifth graders Rachel Wemhoff and Jamie Chmelik, and 4th graders Nicole Frei, Savannah Kuther, Savanah Prigge, Brandee Seubert and Rachel Uhlenkott played in the 6th grade division of the tourney, which also featured competition in the fourth and fifth grades, each division hosting four teams from schools around the area.
Summit lost a very close 14 to 12 match with Kamiah sixth in game one, then won two straight over sixth grade teams from Grangeville and Orofino. With the second best record in the tourney, the Academy girls matched up one more time with host Kamiah, but playing their third game on Saturday, and suffering from fatigue, fell to the host champions, their third loss of the season to that AAU team. The tourney concluded the girl’s season with a final record of 7 wins and 6 losses, the season providing valuable experience for several fourth graders on the team. Annette Wemhoff and Jill Seubert were the coaches for the team this year.

Summit Elementary boys conclude season
With a 23 to 12 win over Craigmont in their final game of the season, Summit’s elementary school boys’ basketball team concluded a very successful 2003/2004 season with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. The team, led in scoring by sixth graders Dylan Prigge and Josh Frei, and fifth grader Beau Schlader started the season with a 26 to 32 loss to Nezperce, in a game with no sixth graders present, and Summit forced to use Mary Shears and Rachel Wemhoff to make up a team. Back to full strength, Summit next recorded a 44 to 10 victory over CV, a 41 to 26 win over CV in a return match, a very close 41 to 42 loss to Nezperce back in Summit’s gym, then back on the winning trail with a 49 to 30 win over Kamiah, then another 28 to 26 close loss to the same Kamiah team in their home gym rematch. The Patriots then ended the season with a five game winning streak, recording wins over Prairie 5th – 43 to 12, Highland 5th – 37 to 8, Grangeville sixth – 34 to 26 in their best game of the season, 39 to 21 again over Prairie 5th, and the final 23 to 12 win over Highland.
In addition to Prigge, Frei and Schlader, Summit boys on the team included David Johnson – 5th grade, fourth graders Austin Chmelik and Derek Nuxoll, and 3rd grader Nick Shears and Danny Wemhoff. Jim Chmelik and Felix Nuxoll served as coaches for the boys this season.
