The Prairie High School volleyball team gets into action this week with their Red & Black Scrimmage Wednesday, August 25 at 6 p.m. at the high school gym. Then on Thursday they’ll travel to Lewiston for a Jamboree which is set to start at 5:30 p.m. Coach Danette Coleman didn’t know as of Monday just which teams would be at the Jamboree. The squad’s first regular season matches are set for next Tuesday, August 31. The varsity will travel to Highland for matches against Highland and Grangeville while the JV will travel to Grangeville to play against the same schools. Coach Coleman said she is real excited about this year’s team saying they have shown a lot of desire to do well. She is carrying 9 players on the varsity and all will get a lot of playing time. Returning starters are middle blocker Briget Long, a senior, and outside hitter Natalie Arnzen, a junior. Bridget Enneking, a junior, saw a lot of play as a setter last year and Lauren Merrill, a senior, saw action in district as a back row specialist. Also seeing some action on varsity last year was Vanessa Sonnen, a senior. Up from the JV are juniors Ashley Jackson, Sarah Forsmann, Lindsey Crea and Ashley Schaeffer. There are 34 total players out for this year’s team. Twelve sophomores and a junior make up the JV squad. New for Prairie this year is that they’ll be competing in the 1-A White Pine League for the first time. The league is split into two divisions. Prairie will be in the South Division with Highland, Culdesac, Nezperce and Timberline. Lapwai, Troy, Deary, Genesee and Kendrick make up the North Division. They’ll play two league matches against division foes and 1 league match each against the other division. District tournament play will start with a pair of elimination matches where the 4th and 5th place teams in each division battle for the final 2 district slots. Then they’ll have a double elimination 8-team tournament with 3 teams qualifying for State. State will be at Declo and Burley. State is different also as pool play on Thursday, Oct. 28 will eliminate half the 16 teams leaving an 8-team tournament for Friday and Saturday. |
