Lady Pirates win at Highland The Prairie Lady Pirates clamped down on defense in the third quarter and broke open a close game as they went on to beat Highland 37-23 at Craigmont Friday, Dec. 10. Baskets were scarce early on as Prairie built a 6-2 lead in the first quarter with 4 free throws with Natalie Arnzen scoring 5 of those first 6 points. Highland then got to Prairie for a couple of turnovers with a full-court press and closed the quarter with 5 unanswered points for a 6-7 lead. Baskets by Ashley Jackson and Brittny Behler put Prairie back on top at 10-7 but Highland came back to tie the score at 11-11. With 2:54 left in the half Behler scored a free throw that put Prairie on top to stay. Tiffany Schaeffer added a baseline jumper to make it 14-11 but Highland closed to within 1 at the half with a late basket. In the third quarter the Prairie defense took over as they held the Huskies scoreless for the first 7 minutes and allowed just 2 points total in the quarter. Meanwhile Arnzen started the second half scoring with a 3-point play. A 3-pointer by Jackson and a putback by Behler put Prairie up 22-13 before Highland finally scored in the quarter. Behler added another basket to make it 24-15 at the end of the quarter. Prairie scored the first 7 points of the fourth quarter to build their lead to 31-15 with 4:43 left in the game. Highland then went back to their press and started forcing some turnovers. The Huskies scored 8 straight points to cut the lead down to 31-23 with 1:00 to play. Jackson then hit both ends of a 1 and 1 at the line to break the run. Vanessa Sonnen and Behler each added a free throw and Sonnen closed out the scoring with a basket for the win. With the win Prairie is 3-1 in White Pine League play and 6-2 overall. Prairie had little trouble in the JV game as they led 18-1 at the end of the first quarter and went on to win 42-15. Prairie built a 10-0 lead before Highland scored their single first quarter point. Tiffany Schaeffer scored 8 of those first quarter points as she was a perfect 4 for 4 from the field. She played only the first quarter, which left her full eligibility for the varsity game. After hitting 9 of 15 shots in the opening quarter, Prairie cooled off considerably in the second as they scored just 2 points in the first 6 minutes of the quarter, a lay-up by Tabitha Sonnen. They heated up in the final 2 minutes though with 6 points to close the half with a 26-5 lead. They played even with Highland in the third quarter as each team scored 6 points before outscoring the Huskies 10-4 in the final frame. Becky Gehring wound up as the leading scorer with 10 points with Schaeffer scoring 8, Carolyn Sonnen and Randi Schumacher 6 each, Nicole Nida and Myken Dahlen 4 each and Kylie Uhlorn and Tabitha Sonnen 2 each.
