Lady Pirates win tournament
The Prairie Lady Pirates played well in the annual Prairie Classic Tournament and won the championship by defeating Council 47-39 on Friday, Dec. 17 and the Lewiston JV 50-33 on Saturday.Briget Long shoots against the Lewiston JV.
In Friday’s game the two teams felt each other out in the first quarter and defense dominated as Prairie held a 4-3 lead at the quarter break. 
Council opened the second quarter scoring with a putback to take their only lead of the game. Prairie responded with an 11-0 run to take control. 
Ashley Jackson started the run with a steal and lay-up. Bridget Enneking scored a free throw, Brittny Behler drove under the basket and popped back out for a short jumper. Briget Long and Enneking scored on putbacks and Behler finished the run with a 10 ft. jumper.
Council battled back with 2-9 run that cut the lead to 17-14 but Prairie ended the quarter with a 4-0 run for a 21-14 halftime lead.
Although Prairie led the entire second half, they never could shake the Lumberjacks.
Prairie led by as many as 7 in the third quarter but Council cut the lead to 4 on a couple of occasions.
Prairie led 29-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
Council opened the fourth quarter by outscoring Prairie 4-7 to cut the lead to just 2 points at 33-31 with 4:49 left to play.
Behler scored to put the lead at 4 but a Council free throw cut the lead back to 3. Long scored inside but Council again cut the lead to 3 with 2 minutes to play.
Behler scored 2 free throws to push the lead back to 5 but a basket by Council cut the lead back to 3 again with 1:17 left.
A putback by Behler and a free throw by Jackson pushed the lead to 6 with 30 seconds left.
Two free throws trimmed the lead back to 4 but Behler answered with a driving lay-up as Prairie broke Council’s press.
After a Council free throw Jackson put an exclamation point on the game when she swished a buzzer beater from about 30 feet out for the final 8-point margin.
Behler wound up with 18 points to lead the scoring with Long scoring 10, Enneking 7, Jackson 6, Vanessa Sonnen 4 and Ashley Schultz 2.
Prairie controlled the boards 45-34 with Long collecting 12 rebounds to lead the team. Enneking and Behler added 8 rebounds each.

Prairie connected on 19 of 54 shots, 35%, and 8 of 25 free throws. Council was 12 for 42 from the field, 29%, and 13 for 21 at the line.
In Saturday’s championship game against the Lewiston JV Prairie trailed at halftime 20-23 but outscored the Bengals 30-11 in the second half to pull out the win.
Natalie Arnzen got the Lady Pirates off to a strong start as she scored the first 5 points of the game. She connected on a pair of free throws then converted a 3-point play for a 5-0 Prairie lead.
Lewiston answered back though and outscored Prairie 5-13 the rest of the quarter.
In the second quarter Prairie’s defense started to assert itself as they kept Lewiston out of the lane but the Bengals kept their lead by bombing away from the outside as they connected on three 3-pointers.
In the third quarter Sonnen quickly tied the score as she stole the ball and drove full court for a lay-up. 
Lewiston took back the lead with a basket but then the Pirates took over. Lewiston’s 3’s quit falling and Prairie’s inside game took control as the Pirates scored 13 straight points.
Arnzen started things with a lay-up and a short baseline jumper. Behler scored a lay-up on an inbounds play and then added a free throw. Long and Behler scored on putbacks and Jackson closed out the run with a lay-up.
Lewiston finally broke the run with a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the quarter.
Prairie kept it going in the fourth out they opened the final quarter with a 13-3 run.
Prairie had 3 players in double figures led by Behler with 13, all in the second half.. Long and Arnzen scored 12 points each with Enneking scoring 5 and Jackson, Sonnen, Schultz and VanderPas 2 each. 
Prairie dominated the boards 45-27 with Long, Behler and Arnzen each completing a double-double with 10 rebounds each.
Jackson had 3 steals and 6 assists.
Prairie connected on 22 of 47 shots, 47%, and 6 of 17 free throws. Lewiston was 13 for 49 from the field, 26.5%, and 0 for 5 at the line. It was a tale of two halves as Prairie was 14 for 28 in the second half while Lewiston was just 4 for 22.
Long and Arnzen were both named to the all-tournament team with Behler named the tournament MVP.
With the wins Prairie improves to 8-2 on the season.
