Nida,
Riener win state titles
Nicole Nida won 3 state titles while J.D. Riener took 2 at the State Track Meet at Boise May 18-20. Nida swept the sprints winning the 100, 200 and 400 while Riener won the shot put and discus. Nida had a time of 12.8 to win the 100, 26.22 to win the 200 and 1:00.65 to win the 400. In the 200 win she beat defending state champ and record holder Darcy Collins of Kootenai. Collins’ only non-first place finish in state competition. Riener had a personal best of 50’4” on his very last throw which put him ahead of Nezperce’s Nathan Rosenau who had beaten Riener at Regionals. Riener had a mark of 143’5” in the discus and won by nearly 2 feet. Prairie also brought home several more medals. Tabitha Sonnen took second in the 300 hurdles in 48.52 and fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.03. She also placed just barely out of the medals in the triple jump as she was 7th with a mark of 31’3½”. Adding to her difficulty in the triple jump was the fact her final jumps coincided with the 100 hurdle preliminaries and she had to take all 3 jumps in succession without any rest breaks. Charlene Duman took fourth in the discus with a mark of 102’2” and Kaylee Uhlenkott was fourth in the shot put at 33’4½”. Gina Holthaus tied the personal best mark she had last week at Regionals and took sixth in the long jump at 15’9¾”. Prairie also picked up a medal in the 4x400 relay as the team of Kayla Lorentz, Holthaus, Sonnen and Nida took fourth in 4:21.13. Tim Russell placed 12th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.91. As a team the girls placed third with 63 points, just ½ point behind runner-up Cole Valley Christian. Kootenai again took first with 75½ points. The boys team placed 11th with 20 points, 10 points for each of Riener’s first place finishes. All state track photos courtesy of Bob Nida.
