win big over C.V.
The Prairie football team celebrated Homecoming with a 54-8 win over the Clearwater Valley Rams Friday, Sept. 8 at Cottonwood. The Pirates rolled to a 40-0 lead by the end of the first quarter then gave everyone on the squad a chance to see varsity action. It took only 57 seconds to put the first points on the board. Prairie too the opening kickoff with Branden Waller recovering C.V.’s onside kick try at the Prairie 34. 3 plays later Dan Riener took the ball around right end and went 58 yards for a touchdown. Ryan Daly ran in the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. On the kickoff C.V. got a 48 yard return from Dustin Patereau to set them up in Pirate territory at the 30 yard line. 2 running plays netted minus 5 yards and a screen pass got them back to the 30. On fourth and 10 the center snap sailed over the quarterback’s head and he recovered it back at the 44 where Prairie took over on downs. Riener had another big gainer as he broke several tackles on the way to a 31 yard gain. Two plays later Kyle Holthaus found his cousin, Jake Holthaus, wide open in the end zone for an 18 yard touchdown play. Riener ran in the 2-pointer for a 16-0 lead. C.V’s next two possessions were 3 plays and punt while Prairie scored following both possessions. Riener gained 38 yards on a pass play to set up the next touchdown. He ran it in from the 4 on the next play. Kyle Holthaus ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0. On the next possession Holthaus found David Sigler over the middle form a 41 yard gain to put the Pirates at the 17. Ryan Daly went 11 yards around the left side on the next play and 6 yards up the middle for the touchdown. Holthaus passed to Sigler for the 2-pointer and a 32-0 lead. C.V. turned the ball over on a fumble on their next possession with Jake Holthaus recovering at the C.V. 27. On the next play Kyle Daly went around right end for 27 yards and a touchdown with less than a second left on the clock. Branden Johnson ran in the 2-pointer to make it 40-0. Against Prairie’s backups on defense, C.V. was able to mount a scoring drive as they went 61 yards in 13 plays for a touchdown to make it 40-8. C.V. then tried an onside kick and successfully recovered it at the 50. That possession was ended though when Mike Mattson intercepted a 4th down pass attempt at the 31 and returned it to the 35. Prairie came up short on fourth down themselves and turned the ball back to the 44. C.V. was able to get down to the Prairie 20 before time ran out in the half. On the second half kickoff, C.V.’s return man fumbled the ball at the 38 and Cody Miller recovered it for Prairie at that point. 3 plays later Riener scored on a draw play out of shotgun formation, going up the middle for 24 yards. Prairie then ran the “Homecoming King” special for the 2-point try as J.D. Riener, out of a guard-eligible formation, was wide open for a pass reception from Kyle Holthaus to make it 48-8. C.V. then put together a long drive but came up 1 yard short on a fourth down try to give Prairie back the ball at the 10 yard line. Prairie picked up a couple of first downs before Nate Kaschmitter threw an interception that C.V. made at their own 48. C.V. picked up a first down on a run then had what looked like big yardage on a screen play but fumbled after a 20 yard gain with Daniel Sigler recovering at the 21. Ryan Daly gained 11 yards to the right and Riener added another 10 yards on a sweep to the outside to put the ball on the 32. Kaschmitter then tossed a short pass out to Ryan Daly who took the ball the distance down the left sideline for 58 yards to end the game on the 45-point rule with 43.1 seconds left in the third quarter. Riener wound up with 147 yards on 7 carries to lead the rushing attack. Ryan Daly added 44 yards on 6 carries and Kyle Daly had 27 yards on 1 carry. Overall Prairie had 256 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Kyle Holthaus completed 3 of 6 pass attempts for 97 yards and a touchdown while Kaschmitter was 1 for 3 for 58 yards with an interception. Ryan Daly caught 1 pass for 58 yards, David Sigler 1 for 41, Riener 1 for 38 and Jake Holthaus 1 for 18. Prairie had 410 yards of offense. C.V. managed just 67 yards rushing and 89 passing for 156 total yards. Their quarterback, B.J. Allen completed 10 of 17 attempts with 1 interception and 89 yards. Their top rusher was Jesse Davis who had 53 yards on 11 carries. Twenty-five different players were credited with at least half a tackle on defense led by Mattson who had 6½ including an interception and Ronnie Chandler who had 5. Miller had 4½ plus a fumble recovery. Kyle Daly had 4 tackles and Branden Waller had 3. Dan Riener, Ryan Daly and Zach Frei had 2½ tackles each. Ben Forsmann had 2 quarterback sacks. David Sigler, Tyler Forsmann and Andy Groom had 2 tackles each. Prairie improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play. They travel to Lapwai this Friday for another White Pine League game.
