Pirates lose at Deary
The Prairie football team lost any chance at qualifying for state as they were soundly beaten at Deary 30-66 Friday, Oct. 20.
Deary was inspired by it being their senior night and Prairie seemed to have a letdown after their big win the previous week against Genesee.David Sigler gains yardage for a first down on a pass play.
The Pirates started well as Danny Riener gained 46 yards on Prairie’s first play from scrimmage. 5 plays later Ryan Daly scored from the 2 to give Prairie a 6-0 lead.
Deary answered right back with their own touchdown drive as they took less than 2 minutes to tie the score at 6-6.
Prairie’s next possession saw the Pirates come up about 6 inches short on 4th down at the Deary 40 and turn the ball over on downs.
The Pirates forced the Mustangs to punt and Riener picked up 15 yards on a sweep to the right.
Two plays later though Kyle Holthaus’ pass attempt to David Sigler was intercepted at the Deary 35.
Three plays later Deary had taken the lead at 6-12.
Prairie’s next possession saw the Pirates drive deep into Deary territory but they again came up inches short on 4th down and turned the ball over to Deary at the Mustangs’ 18 yard line.
It took Deary just 2 plays to add another touchdown.
Prairie was forced to punt on their next possession and Deary answered again with a touchdown.
Prairie’s next possession ended with a fumble as Deary took over at their own 38.
Prairie appeared to have Deary stopped as they had them in a fourth down situation at the 3 yard line. Deary’s Chris Pratt took the handoff and was met in the backfield by the Pirates defense but managed to stay on his feet and forged ahead for the touchdown that made it 6-32 with 4:51 left in the half.
Danny Riener battles toward the end zone. At right is J.D. Riener.Prairie finally put together another scoring drive with help from a pass interference call against Deary that moved the ball into Mustang territory at the 39. 3 runs by Riener picked up another first down. Holthaus connected with Sigler for 20 yards to set up first and goal at the 3. After a loss of a yard, Riener took a pitch and went around left end for the touchdown. Holthaus passed to Sigler for the 2-pointer to cut the lead to 14-32 with 1:21 left in the half.
Prairie got to kick off from the Deary 45 thanks to a late hit penalty on the conversion play and tried an onside kick. Deary recovered at their 34.
A holding penalty and a 2 yard loss put Deary back to the 28. Prairie called a timeout in anticipation of getting the ball back but Pratt broke loose for a 72 yard touchdown on the next play to up the lead to 14-40.
Prairie was able to get down to the Deary 13 before time ran out in the half.
Prairie tried an onside kick to open the second half but Deary recovered at the 50. It took the Mustangs just 2 plays to added another touchdown.
Prairie came right back though with Holthaus finding Tyler Forsmann wide open deep in the Deary secondary for a 41 yard scoring play. A holding penalty forced the Pirates to go for the conversion from the 13 but Kyle Holthaus passed to Jake Holthaus for the 2 points to make it 22-46.
With help from a holding penalty the Pirates were able to stop Deary on downs and took over at their own 47.
They overcame their own holding penalty with a 27 yard pass play from Holthaus to Sigler.
An offsides penalty helped the Pirates get a first down at the Deary 27. At that point though Holthaus missed on a pair of passes and then was intercepted with Deary returning the interception out to their 47. On the next play the Mustangs scored again to make it 22-52.
Prairie turned the ball over on downs again and Deary answered with another score to make it 22-58 early in the fourth quarter.
Prairie then put together their final scoring drive as they went 65 yards in 17 plays with Holthaus passing to Sigler for the final 3 yards. That combination also worked for the 2-point to make it 30-58 with 4:50 to play.
Deary came right back with their own scoring drive for their final score. They added the 2-pointer to make it 30-66.
Prairie’s final possession stalled out at the 40 and Deary ran out the clock.
Riener gained 230 yards rushing on 34 carries and Ryan Daly added 20 yards on 13 carries. Prairie had 261 yards rushing on 60 attempts.
Holthaus completed 9 of 24 pass attempts with 2 interceptions for 145 yards. Sigler was 0 for 1 passing.
Sigler caught 7 passes for 90 yards while Forsmann caught 1 for 41. Branden Waller caught 1 for 14 yards.
Deary totaled 661 yards of offense, 614 of it rushing. Pratt carried 23 times for 308 yards while quarterback Dustin Eggers carried 5 times for 129 yards, Tyler Brown 6 times for 111 yards and Luke Seubert 8 times for 56 yards.
Eggers was 2 for 3 passing for 47 yards.
David Sigler led in tackles with 6½ with Riener having 6 tackles and Kyle Daly and Waller 5 each. Ryan Daly had 3½ tackles while Corey Schaeffer had 2½. Nate Kaschmitter, Jake Holthaus, Cody Miller and Daniel Sigler had 1 tackle eeach and Forsmann and J.D. Riener had ½ tackle each.
The loss drops Prairie to 5-3 on the season and 4-3 in league play.
If Prairie beats Timberline Friday they could still be tied for third best record in the league, but unfortunately they come up short on any of the tie-breakers. Kendrick and Troy have already clinched as each has just 1 league loss. Genesee has 2 losses and faces Deary this Friday. If Genesee wins they’d be the third place team. If Deary wins and Prairie wins, there would be a 3-way tie among Deary, Prairie and Genesee but Deary would have wins over both Genesee and Prairie. If Deary and Timberline win then there would be a 3-way tie between Deary, Genesee and Timberline for the third place spot and since each has beaten only one of the other two there would be a playoff.
