First graders at Prairie Elementary School have some "lofty goals" for reading...in their "tree-house reading loft" that is! Cindy Schumacher wrote and was awarded a "Governor's Grant for Innovative Teaching" to build the reading loft for her classroom. Tom Schumacher (Mrs. Schumacher's husband) spent many, many hours during the Christmas holidays building the loft so that the children would have this fun surprise upon returning to school after the Christmas break. As stated in the grant application, Mrs. Schumacher believes that one of the most important jobs a first grade teacher can have is to help children realize and gain a love of reading...wherever that may be! In their classroom, the children have an "old blue bathtub" filled with comfortable pillows and now the "tree-house loft" in which they can snuggle up with a good book! Reading is great whether you are sitting in a chair, laying in a tub, or reading in a loft! A special thank-you to Tom Schumacher for making the loft for our classroom!! When you're at the elementary school be sure to stop by and see our tree-house loft.

In December the Tiger Cubs of Pack 638—Hunter Chaffee, Jared Sonnen and Anthony Karel, visited the hospital. They made placemats for the long term care patients and sang them songs. Photo by Shari Chaffee.

Wrestling coaches Steve Lamont and Dan Altman receive checks worth $3,426.23 from Jennifer Heitman,  Secretary/Treasurer of the Cottonwood Wrestling Club (top photo) and $2,092.57 from Prairie Booster Club President Chris Kaschmitter (bottom photo). Funds will help pay for a new wrestling mat. See story on wrestling page at left.

Attendance winners for the month of December are Dally Ratcliff and Leah Higgins, pictured here with the Prairie Elementary school Principal, Mr. Deiss.
