forum in series is this week
The first presentation in the Our Health Our Community public forum series is scheduled this Thursday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Soltman Center, Grangeville. Deanna English, RN, CMT, RYT, will talk about stress reduction and mind body health.  She
will discuss how stress impacts the body and its various systems.
The forums are sponsored by Grangeville Physical Therapy and Groaner’s
Fitness as a public service. GPT is administered by St. Mary’s Hospital.
“I think most people accept that there is a connection between the mind and the body. We’ll explore that connection and see how stress can affect the disease process,” said English. “We’ll do a body scan exercise that will help us understand just how the brain and body work together.” English is a registered nurse, a certified massage therapist in various modalities, and a registered yoga teacher. She moved to the Grangeville area in 1979. She worked with both Gritman Medical Center in Moscow and Nimiipuu Health Services to establish their integrative wellness programs. The Our Health Our Community forums will be scheduled every other month. Future topics include cholesterol and the cardiac connection; arthritis and exercise; diabetes prevention and maintenance and others. “My presentation this Thursday is designed for people of all ages. I’ll be discussing some of the tenets of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, a program offered by more and more health care organizations. It is seen both as a preventive tool and as a means of assisting people in living well with long-term health problems,” said English. “We’ll look at research based evidence and I’ll describe some self regulatory techniques that anyone can use to cope well with the stress that exists in every day life. Handouts describing six yoga exercises that can be done at a desk and three minute breathing exercises will be available. There is no charge for the forum and no pre registration is necessary. The public is invited. |
