Pirates beat Lewis County
The Prairie softball team took advantage of 16 walks and 4 hit batters to score 17 runs while collecting just 2 hits as they beat Lewis County 17-3 Thursday, April 5 at Cottonwood. Meghan VanderPas and Tiffany Schaeffer combined to pitch a no-hitter. VanderPas pitched the first 3 innings allowing 3 runs on no hits while walking 2 and hitting 1 batter with 6 strikeouts. Schaeffer pitched the fourth inning and faced 4 batters. She hit one but struck out the other 3. Lewis County managed to score first on 2 walks and a couple of ground outs to take a 0-1 lead. Prairie came back in the bottom of the first though and sent 13 hitters to the plate. 10 were walked and another was hit by a pitch as the Pirates scored 8 runs without benefit of a hit. Hilaree VanderPas picked up the Pirates’ first hit as she led off the second inning with a triple to right center. Prairie’s only other hit of the game also came in the second inning as Brooke Holthaus had a 2-run single. In between the 2 hits there were 5 walks, 2 hit batters and an error as Prairie tallied 7 more runs to take a 15-1 lead. Lewis County added another pair of runs in the third on a hit batter, passed ball on strike 3, illegal pitch (which in softball works just like a balk in baseball as the baserunners advance 1 base) and a couple wild pitches. Prairie added 2 more runs in the third on a walk, hit batter, and a passed ball on strike three that also led to a throwing error by the catcher. The game was called after the fourth inning due to an agreed upon time limit for the game. With the win Prairie improves to 2-0 in league play and 7-2 overall.
