After a layoff of 10 days due to other teams dropping baseball and a cancellation, the Prairie baseball team got back into action Monday, April 23 and beat Clearwater Valley 12-2 at Cottonwood in a game ended in the bottom of the fifth on the 10-run mercy rule. Prairie took advantage of 3 walks and 2 hit batsmen along with 3 hits to score 8 runs in the first inning. Kyle Holthaus led off the game with a double to right field and moved to third on a wild pitch. Kyle Daly was hit by a pitch and Holthaus scored on Dan Riener’s sacrifice fly. Daly then scored on Ronnie Chandler’s double. Eric Daly walked and Conner Rieman singled. Eric came around to score on a couple of wild pitches as did Rieman. Ben Schumacher walked and also advanced around the bases on wild pitches. Ben Forsmann was hit by a pitch and Holthaus walked in his second time up in the inning. Forsmann wound up getting put out trying to advance on a wild pitch. Holthaus advanced to third on the play and scored when Kyle Daly reached on a passed ball on strike three. Clearwater Valley took advantage of 2 walks, an error and a double to score 2 runs in the second inning but that was all they would get off Prairie pitcher Holthaus. The Pirates added 2 more runs in the fourth inning as Chandler led off with a single and Eric Daly followed with a walk. Chandler wound up scoring when Ben Schumacher reached on a passed ball on strike three. Daly scored on another wild pitch. The Pirates led 10-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Holthaus reached on a throwing error by the C.V. shortstop. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Kyle Daly walked and stole second. Both runners scored, ending the game, when Riener singled to left. Holthaus wound up allowing the 2 runs on just 2 hits with 10 strikeouts and 3 walks in his first complete game outing on the mound. The Pirates meanwhile had 6 hits with Chandler having a double and single, Rieman 2 singles, Holthaus a double and Riener a single. With the win they improve to 6-2 in league play and 9-5 overall.
