Pirates edge Asotin
The Prairie Pirates erased a 10-point deficit in the final 2 minutes to pull out a 60-59 win over Asotin Friday, Dec. 28 at the Orofino Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament.Branden Waller goes high for a shot.
Prairie led most of the first half, at one point by 10 points, but a disastrous third quarter put them into the hole they had to climb out of late.
Prairie led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter but Asotin tied it early in the second. Prairie then went on a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead at 22-12 with 3:35 left in the half.
Branden Waller started the run by converting a 3-point play as he and Tyler Forsmann each scored 5 points in the run.
Asotin broke the streak with a 3-point shot that started a 2-8 run of their own that cut the lead to 4.
A driving lay-up and then a 3-pointer by David Sigler put the lead back at 9, 29-20, with 1:01 left in the half.
Asotin closed out the first half scoring with 5 straight points to pull within 4, 29-25.
Asotin quickly tied the score in the third quarter but a driving lay-up by Sigler put Prairie back on top. After an Asotin free throw Devin Schmidt hit a 3-pointer to make it 34-30 with 5:01 left in the third.
Prairie then went ice-cold while Asotin scored 8 straight points to take a 34-38 lead.
They went on to take a 40-47 lead into the fourth quarter.
Prairie was able to pull within 4 on a couple of occasions but a 0-6 run from 5:20 to 4:13 left gave Asotin their 49-59 lead.
For the next 2:29, neither team scored as turnovers and missed shots on both sides ruled.
Finally, with 1:44 left, Waller rebounded a missed Prairie shot and scored and was fouled on the play. He converted the 3-point play to cut the lead to 7.
Asotin was then called for an offensive foul which led to a basket by Forsmann with 1:38 left.
24 seconds later Sigler was fouled and converted both ends of a 1 and 1 to cut the lead to 3 at 56-59.
With 15 seconds left Kyle Daly scored a putback of a miss by Schmidt to cut the lead to 1.
Asotin inbounded and with 7 seconds left Sigler fouled Asotin’s leading scorer Perry Black, who had drained 2 free throws earlier in the game. Before the free throw, Sigler went to the referee and told him Prairie wanted a timeout as soon as they got the ball.
Black missed the front end of the one and one and Waller rebounded with the timeout called with 6.5 seconds left.
Kyle Daly took the ball out on the ensuing inbounds play and after he faked in, Schmidt turned and sprinted downcourt and Daly hit him with a perfect baseball pass just over the midcourt line. Schmidt drove to the hoop for a lay-up with 3 seconds left to give Prairie the lead. Schmidt then deflected the inbounds pass by Asotin with Sigler grabbing the ball as time ran out.
Waller wound up with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates in both categories. Sigler scored 16, Forsmann and Schmidt 7 each, Kyle Daly and Kyle Holthaus 4 each, Eric Daly 2 and Kenneth Enneking 1.

Pirates lose in championship game
The Prairie Pirates couldn’t muster the late comeback magic two nights in a row as they fell to Orofino 44-60 in the championship game of the Orofino Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament Saturday, Dec. 29.
David Sigler puts up a 3-point shot against Orofino. Both teams played at a frenetic pace throughout, leading to over 20 turnovers each.

Prairie kept it close through the first quarter, actually taking a 9-5 lead when David Sigler hit a 3-pointer.
Orofino answered with 7 straight points though and led 11-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie led at 13-12 and 15-14 in the second quarter but a 3-10 run put the Maniacs into the lead for good.
Orofino took a 20-26 lead into the halftime break.

Prairie trailed by 15 late in the third at 26-41 with Devin Schmidt scoring at the end of the period to cut the lead back to 13.
A basket each by Sigler and Branden Waller to open the fourth cut the lead down to 9 but 4 straight points by the Maniacs pushed the lead back to 13.
Sigler then scored 7 straight points for Prairie to pull the Pirates within 6 at 39-45 with 3:40 left, but that was as close as Prairie could get. Orofino outscored Prairie 5-15 the rest of the way with all but 4 of those 15 points coming from the free throw line.
Prairie’s only points came from a steal and drive by Waller and a long 3-pointer by Sigler.
Sigler wound up with 20 points to lead the Pirates with Waller scoring 8, Kyle Daly and Schmidt 6 each, and Tyler Forsmann and Kenneth Enneking 2 each.
Rebounding was even at 33 each with Waller and Schmidt each grabbing 8 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
