35
turn out for football
The Prairie football team has 35 players turned out for football this year with most of the key players back from last year’s second consecutive 6-3 team. Those were the first back-to-back winning seasons for Prairie since the early 80’s. Head coach Travis Mader said there are 7 of 8 starters back from last year’s team both offensively and defensively. He feels it’s time to take the next step and get into the state playoffs as long as they can cut down on the mental mistakes that kept them from putting away a couple of teams they lost to last year. Last year’s sophomores and juniors are now juniors and seniors and he feels they will supply the leadership needed to take the next step. He sees Deary and Troy as the top contenders this year, along with Prairie. Genesee and Kendrick could also surprise. The entire starting backfield returns with junior Kyle Holthaus at quarterback, senior Kyle Daly and junior Branden Waller at running backs and juniors David Sigler and Conner Rieman at wide receiver. Returning after sitting out a year is senior wide receiver/defensive end Tyler Forsmann. Another key returnee is all-league offensive and defensive lineman Kyler Shumway, a junior. Also returning on the line is senior Ronnie Chandler. Mader said he feels they have more depth to work with this year as the JV team players from last year gained a lot of experience and should be able to provide the occasional break for the starters. Seniors on this years team are Daly, Forsmann, Chandler, Mike Matson, Cody Miller, Andy Groom, Chase Nuxoll and Jason VonBargen. Juniors are Sigler, Rieman, Waller, Dustin Schaeffer, Holthaus, Tyrell Langston, Jimmy Ingbretson, Chris Schmidt, Jack George, Joe Schumacher, Phillip Smakman, Colton Nuxoll, Derek Schaeffer and Shumway. Sophomores on the team are Devin Schmidt, Brock Heath and J.C. Enriquez. Freshmen are Troy Lorentz, Tim Frei, Justin Schmidt, Cody Schumacher, Josh Roeper, Nate Matson, Josh Zigler, Robert Nau, Kyle Marker and Garrett Roush. The varsity squad sees their first action this Friday with a home game against Lewis County while the JV squad played this past Tuesday at Kendrick. Sept. 15 JV game cancelled The JV football game scheduled for Sept. 15 against Clearwater Valley has been cancelled. C.V. doesn’t have enough players this year to have a JV program and athletic director Travis Mader was unable to find a replacement game.
