Pirates lose at Grangeville
The Prairie Lady Pirates volleyball team lost their season opener as they fell to Grangeville 21-25, 16-25, 26-24 and 17-25 Thursday, August 28 at Grangeville. The one game the Lady Pirates won they fell behind 0-9 and 3-12 to start the game. Serving helped get Prairie back into the game as Brianne Stubbers, Kaylee Uhlenkott and Francesca Johnson each served up a pair of aces to help Prairie pull within 13-17. Kills by Samantha Johnson and Leora Laurino followed by an ace by Jennifer Enneking cut the lead to 16-19. With Casey Bruegeman serving Kayla Johnson stuffed a pair of Grangeville spikes and Bruegeman added 2 aces to cut the lead to 1 at 22-23. After a sideout gave Grangeville a chance at match point, Uhlenkott smashed a spike through a Grangeville block and Kayla Johnson added a kill to tie the game. Stubbers then served up two aces to give Prairie the win. They couldn’t carry that momentum very far into the fourth game though. Prairie took a 3-2 lead early but Grangeville then reeled off 8 straight points to take control. Prairie was able to rally back within 15-17 at one point but Grangeville dominated the rest of the way, outscoring Prairie 2-8 to finish off the match. The opening game was a back and forth battle as Prairie opened up a 6-3 lead thanks to 3 straight aces by Bruegeman. Grangeville came back to take an 8-11 lead but the game was tight until late. Francesca Johnson had 3 aces and Laurino had a pair of kills to help keep it close. The score was tied at 11, 13, 15, 16 and 20 with an ace by Bruegeman tying it at 20. Grangeville scored 5 of the final 6 points though to pull out the win. The second game was close early on with Prairie behind by only 2 at 11-13. Grangeville took over at that point though outscoring Prairie 6-12 to end the game. Laurino led the team in kills with 9 and had 3 service aces. Uhlenkott had 6 kills and 5 aces. Sam Johnson had 5 kills and Sam Frei had 5 kills including a stuff block. Kayla Johnson had 4 kills which included 2 stuff blocks while Long had 3 kills including a stuff. Bruegeman was the top server with 14 service points including 8 aces while Stubbers and Francesca Johnson had 6 aces each. Enneking had 16 assists and 3 aces while Stubbers added 8 assists. The JV team also lost to Grangeville by scores of 18-25, 17-25 and 15-12. In the opening game Prairie took a 4-3 lead after a pair of services points by Sam Poxleitner but Grangeville answered by scoring 7 of the next 9 points to take a 6-13 lead. Prairie was able to fight back to within 1 point at 13-14 on an ace by Megan Sigler but a pair of 4-point runs by Grangeville led to the 7-point win. In the second game Prairie fell behind 1-10 to open the game, fought back within 3 at 13-16 before finally losing by 8. In the final game Grangeville took a 2-5 lead but a kill by Shelby Duman and an ace by Justina Zigler helped Prairie pull back within 1 at 7-8. Prairie then tied it at 10 when Grangeville hit a spike long with Sigler serving. After a pair of sideouts MaKayla Schaeffer scored a kill to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 12-11. After a sideout by Grangeville, Schaeffer scored another kill to put herself on the service line. She served up 2 aces, one that just barely caught the sideline, to give Prairie the win. The C team also lost their match. They won the first game but lost the next two.
