Pirates
swamp CV 60-14
The Prairie football team won big for the second week in a row, this time against an outmanned Clearwater Valley team 60-14 at Cottonwood Friday, Sept. 12. C.V. kicked off to open the game and tried an onside kick, which was recovered by Kyle Daly at the Prairie 36. On the next play Daly took the ball on a sweep around right end and the line blocked so well that he went untouched for 64 yards and the game’s first touchdown. Kyle Holthaus passed to David Sigler for the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 just 13 seconds into the game. C.V. was forced to punt on their first possession thanks in large part to a quarterback sack where Conner Rieman, Tyler Forsmann and Branden Waller all hit the quarterback at about the same time for a 9 yard loss. Sigler made a great catch of the punt at his own 48 yard line, went down the left sideline and then cutback across the field for a 52 yard scoring play. Holthaus again passed to Sigler for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0. C.V. was again forced to punt and this time punted out of bounds at the Prairie 43. After an incomplete pass, Waller took the ball around right end, and like Daly earlier, went 57 yards untouched for the touchdown. After a 5-yard penalty on the first try for 2, Daly ran in the conversion from the 8 to make it 24-0. On C.V.’s first play after the kickoff, Sigler intercepted the C.V. pass at the 28 yard line. Prairie started subbing in the second unit on offense but 4 plays later Tyrell Langston went in from the 10 for Prairie’s 4th touchdown. Holthaus passed to Derek Schaeffer for the 2-pointer to make it 32-0. After another out of bounds C.V. punt which saw Prairie take over at the C.V. 32, Prairie took 8 plays to score. Key plays were a 7 yard quarterback push up the middle by Devin Schmidt on fourth and 2 and a 13 yard pass from Schmidt to his brother Justin Schmidt on the first play of the second quarter, that set up first and goal at the 4. On the next play Prairie ran a reverse with Brock Heath winding up with the ball and taking it around left end for the score. The conversion try failed leaving Prairie up 38-0. The two teams traded punts with C.V. taking over again at their own 29. 3 plays later, on a third and 14, C.V. tried a tailback option pass with tight end Jake Walker getting behind the defense and catching Jesse Davis’ pass at about the 40. He went all the way for a 75 yard touchdown. The conversion try failed leaving Prairie up 38-6. Prairie was forced to punt again but C.V.’s punt returner was indecisive going after the punt and the referees felt he had touched it as Tim Frei recovered the ball for Prairie at the 17 yard line. Two plays later Dustin Schaeffer ran a sweep around left end for another Prairie touchdown. JV quarterback Troy Lorentz then passed to Justin Schmidt for the 2-pointer with Schmidt making a great catch on the play to make it 46-6. C.V. then ran another trick play as they ran a reverse on the kickoff return and went 60 yards to the Prairie 20. Three plays later Davis caught a 6-yard pass from quarterback Jonathan Paul for C.V.’s second touchdown. Davis ran in the 2-pointer to make it 46-14, which is where the score stood at halftime. Prairie kicked off to start the second half but 3 plays into their possession, Sigler got his second interception of the game. He ran it all the way to the end zone for an apparent 36 yard touchdown but a penalty brought it back to the C.V. 35. On the next play Daly went around left end for another apparent touchdown but another penalty called it back and put the ball at the 30. Waller then made it 4 touchdowns on 4 carries this season with a 30 yard run around right end. The conversion try failed after a penalty pushed them back to the 8. C.V. was forced to punt again with Prairie taking over at the C.V. 38. On the next play Daly went around right end for 38 yards and this time the touchdown wasn’t called back. Holthaus ran in the 2-pointer to end the game on the 45-point rule with 8:54 left in the third quarter. Daly wound up gaining 117 yards on just 3 carries with 2 touchdowns while Waller gained 87 yards on 2 carries with 2 touchdowns. Dustin Schaeffer added 21 yards on 3 carries with a touchdown while Heath gained 13 yards on 6 carries with a touchdown. Holthaus was 1 for 2 passing for 11 yards while Devin Schmidt was 1 for 1 for 13 yards. Lorentz was 0 for 1 passing. Sigler had 1 catch for 11 yards while Justin Schmidt had 1 catch for 24 yards. Prairie had 261 yards rushing on 24 attempts and 24 yards passing. C.V. was held to just 106 total yards with nearly three-quarters of that coming on 1 play. They gained 26 yards rushing on 18 carries and their passers were 3 for 9 for 80 yards with 2 interceptions. Everybody got to play on defense with the leading tacklers having just 2 tackles each. They were Justin Schmidt and J.C. Enriquez. Enriquez also added a sack. Rieman and Forsmann each had 1½ tackles and ½ a sack.Holthaus, Langston, Andy Groom and Derek Schaeffer each had 1½ tackles. Sigler had ½ a tackle and 2 interceptions while Daly had 1 tackle and a fumble recovery and Waller had 1 tackle plaus ½ a sack. With the win Prairie improves to 2-0 in league play and overall.
