Lady
Pirates lose in 5 at Timberline
The Prairie Lady Pirates took a 2 games to 1 lead but couldn’t close out the Timberline Spartans as they lost in 5 games 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 14-25, 12-15 at Weippe Tuesday, Sept. 9. In the opening game Timberline led nearly the whole way but Prairie kept it close as they were never more than 5 points behind. After tying the score at 6-6 after two aces by Kaylee Uhlenkott, Prairie wasn’t able to gain even a tie again although they pulled within 1 at 10-11 and 22-23. The latter after 2 aces by Brianne Stubbers. The second game was another close battle. Prairie led at 3-2 but didn’t lead again until Francesca Johnson served them to an 11-9 lead with an ace after a kill each by Sam Johnson and Chelsea Long. Timberline took back the lead at 11-12 but a kill each by Sam Johnson and Leora Laurino put Prairie back on top. Timberline tied it at 13 but then missed a serve and Prairie never trailed again in the game. After an ace by Casey Bruegeman Prairie led 19-14 but Timberline fought back within 1 at 19-18. A kill on the second hit by Jennifer Enneking followed by a kill from Uhlenkott put the lead back at 3 at 21-18. After several sideouts in a row, Francesca Johnson wound up back at the service line and served up 2 aces to give Prairie the win. In the third game Prairie jumped out to an 11-5 lead but Timberline fought their way back to take the lead at 14-15 and then pulled away to a 14-20 lead before a kill by Uhlenkott ended the run. Bruegeman served an ace and Uhlenkott added another kill to cut the lead back to 3. Timberline pulled away again to a 19-24 lead before a missed serve gave Prairie a chance to come back. Uhlenkott went to the service line knowing she couldn’t afford to miss a serve and she served 2 straight aces to cut the lead to 2. Laurino scored a kill and Uhlenkott added another ace to tie the score at 24. Uhlenkott’s next serve was dug by Timberline but right to Kayla Johnson at the net who knocked it down for a kill. Brianne Stubbers then dug up a Timberline spike with it finding a hole on the Timberline side for the game-winning kill. After staving off 4 straight game points in the second game, Prairie seemed to fall flat in the fourth game. They fell behind 4-13 as Timberline’s 6’2” middle blocker Lundyn Jared dominated at the net and were never able to get back into the game as Timberline evened the match at 2 games apiece. In the deciding game Timberline got the serve to start the game and it appeared Prairie had scored first but the referee overruled the line judge on Laurino’s spike attempt and called her hit out. Timberline added 2 more points for a 0-3 lead. Prairie was able to fight their way back to a tie at 7-7. After falling behind again at 7-9, a serve into the net by Timberline put Francesca Johnson on the service line at 8-9. 2 aces and a kill by Long gave Prairie an 11-9 lead. A trade of sideouts made it 12-10 but that was it for Prairie as Timberline scored another sideout and then served out the match. Uhlenkott led in kills with 10 and had 9 aces. Stubbers had 8 kills, 17 assists and 2 aces. Sam Johnson had 8 kills and 2 assists. Kayla Johnson had 7 kills including a stuff block while Long had 6 kills including a stuff. Laurino had 5 kills including a stuff plus 4 aces. Enneking had 9 assists, 3 kills and 1 ace. Francesca Johnson had 6 aces and 2 back row kills while Bruegeman had 5 aces. With the loss Prairie drops to 1-1 in league play and 1-4 overall. The JV team also lost, salvaging only the third game 13-25, 24-26, 15-8. In the opening game Prairie fell behind 0-4 but with Ashley Shumway serving came back to take the lead at 5-4 as Shumway had 2 aces and MaKayla Schaeffer and Shelby Duman each had a kill. A stuff block by Timberline ended the run and Timberline then put together a 15 point serving run that included 9 aces. Duman finally ended the run with a kill, putting Schaeffer on the service line. Schaeffer served 2 aces and Gina Seubert and Sam Poxleitner each scored a kill to cut the lead to 10-20. After a trade of sideouts Haleigh Schmidt served an ace to make it 12-21 but that was as close as Prairie would get. The second game was a lot more competitive. Prairie fell behind early but a 4-point run by Schaeffer which included an ace and a kill each by Duman, Schmidt and Megan Sigler gave Prairie a 10-9 lead. Prairie fell behind again at 14-19 but fought their way back. At 17-23 Sigler dug up a serve and the ball found a hole on Timberline’s side for a sideout. A kill by Duman followed by 3 straight aces by Schmidt cut the lead to 22-23 before Schmidt missed long on a serve. Seubert scored a kill for the side out and Duman dug a spike for a kill to tie the game at 24-24. Timberline then scored the final 2 points for the win. Schmidt served Prairie to a 4-0 start in the third game with 4 straight aces. Two aces by Poxleitner made it 8-2 and Sigler added an ace for a 10-3 lead. Timberline pulled within 11-5 but a kill by Duman put Schaeffer on the service line for a pair of aces to make it 14-5. Timberline fought off 3 straight game points before serving one into the net to end it.
