Pirates win big at Homecoming game
The Prairie football team rolled to their 4th straight easy win of the season as they knocked off Timberline 50-0 at Prairie’s Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 26 at Cottonwood.David Sigler leaps high to make a catch. He wound up scoring a touchdown on this play.
Also for the fourth straight time the game didn’t make it to the fourth quarter as the game was called with 7:20 left in the third quarter on the 45-point mercy rule.
Timberline put up a bit of a fight as they gained 15 yards on their first play from scrimmage but then had to punt.
David Sigler returned the punt 15 yards to set Prairie up at the Timberline 37 yard line.
On Prairie’s first play on offense Kyle Daly went left for 11 yards and on the second play quarterback Kyle Holthaus found Sigler open over the middle for a 26-yard scoring play.
Daly then managed to score the 2-pointer despite Timberline tacklers getting to him a couple yards shy of the goal line on a run around left end. Daly fought through the tacklers to get the ball to the pylon for the 2 points.
Timberline followed with their best offensive possession of the game as they picked up 3 first downs and moved the ball down to the Prairie 30 yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
It took Prairie just 3 plays to cover the 70 yards for the score. After an incomplete pass, Branden Waller gained 14 yards up the middle.
On the next play Daly took the handoff and went through a huge hole on the left side and went untouched for 56 yards for the touchdown. Holthaus passed to Conner Rieman for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Timberline was 3 and out on their next possession with Prairie taking over at their own 41.
Waller gained 7 yards on a sweep to the right on the first play. On the next play Waller took a short pass to the left from Holthaus and appeared to be tackled at the Timberline 40. He managed to break free from the tackle and went the rest of the way to the end zone for a 52 yard scoring play.
On the extra point try senior lineman Ronnie Chandler got a chance to score. His run up the middle for 2 was called back on a penalty. On the second try from the 8 yard line he was given the ball, rolled out to the right and passed to Sigler in the end zone for the 2-pointer to make it 24-0, which is where the score stood at the end of the first quarter.
Timberline was 3 and out again on their next possession with Prairie taking over at the Timberline 37 after a 37 yard punt return by Sigler.
The second team running backs went in at that point but it still took on 5 plays for Prairie to score with Tyrell Langston going up the middle from the 19 for the score. Holthaus passed to Tyler Forsmann for the 2-pointer to make it 32-0.
After another 3 and out by the Spartans Prairie took over at the Timberline 46.
5 plays later Devin Schmidt fumbled a pitchout and went back to pick it up. He headed toward the right sideline than reversed his field back to the left and was able to turn up field at the left sideline and go all the way for a 35 yard touchdown. The 2-pointer failed leaving Prairie up 38-0 with 4:20 left in the half.
Timberline finally picked up a couple more first down and moved down to the Prairie 39 before their drive stalled out with a penalty and a quarterback sack by Kyler This was the last Timberline defender with any chance of tackling Devin Schmidt on his second half opening 81 yard kickoff return.Shumway and Conner Rieman that set up a fourth and 20.
Rieman stopped the fourth down run for a 7 yard loss and Prairie took over near midfield.
The half ran out with Schmidt gaining 14 yards and 1 step away from going the distance again.
Schmidt made up for that by taking the opening kickoff of the second half at the 19 yard line and going 81 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed again (intentionally?) to leave the score at 44-0.
After forcing another Timberline punt, Prairie took over at their own 32.
Sigler was put in at quarterback with Daly and Waller behind him as the running backs. Sigler gained 9 yards on the first play with Daly gaining 22 around left end on the next.
Waller gained 6 yards up the middle and Sigler was then caught in the backfield for a 1 yard loss.
Waller ended the game on the next play as he burst through the middle for 34 yards and the touchdown.
Daly wound up with 89 yards on just 3 carries while Schmidt had 64 yards on 4 carries and Waller 60 yards, also on 4 carries. Langston added another 31 yards on 4 carries as Prairie rolled up 256 rushing yards on just 20 attempts.
Holthaus was 3 for 5 passing for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns with Sigler catching 2 passes for 32 yards and Waller 1 for 52 yards.
Timberline was held to just 93 total yards, all rushing as they completed 3 of 8 passes for 0 yards.
Timberline’s solid rushing attack kept the first team defense on the field more than in previous games and Waller wound up with 9 tackles to lead the team. Forsmann added 6 tackles while Rieman had 3½ plus a sack and Daly also had 3½ tackles. Collecting 2 ½ tackles each were Sigler, Schmidt, Holthaus, Langston and Chase Nuxoll. Cody Miller had 2 tackles and Shumway had a sack.
With the win Prairie improves to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Their next game is this Friday, Oct. 3, at Lapwai.
