Lady Pirates lose to Kendrick in District opener
The Prairie Lady Pirates couldn’t sustain the momentum from a second half rally as they fell 37-49 to Kendrick in their District Tournament opener Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the Activity Center at LCSC in Lewiston. Megan Sigler passes to Kaylee Uhlenkott in the Kendrick game.
For most of the game the two teams traded scoring runs as one would surge forward and then the other would come back.
Prairie had the first run as they scored 6 straight in the first quarter to take an 8-4 lead but Kendrick answered with a 0-8 run that carried into the second quarter.
Two free throws and a basket by Kaylee Uhlenkott brought Prairie back to a tie at 12 but Kendrick finished the half with a 0-6 run and carried that into the second half with 5 more as they took a 12-23 lead.
6’3” Myriah Deeds did most of the damage in that run with 8 of those 11 points, a theme that carried throughout the rest of the game.
Down by 11 with 6:25 left, Prairie coach Steve Wilson called a timeout and he must’ve said something that connected because Prairie came out of that timeout with a 15-4 run of their own that tied the score at 27 with 1:56 left in the third quarter. Uhlenkott scored 6 of those points while Jennifer Enneking and Megan Sigler each had a 3-pointer.
Sigler’s 3-pointer tied the score.
Kendrick answered back though with a 6-0 run to end the quarter and after a free throw by Uhlenkott opened the fourth quarter scoring, Kendrick reeled off 8 more points to take a 28-41 lead.
Deeds had 6 of the 8 in the fourth quarter portion of the run.
Prairie never got any closer than 9 points the rest of the way.
Uhlenkott wound up with 15 points to lead Prairie with Enneking scoring 8, Mary Shears 7, Sigler 3 and Kara Guyer and Kristi Poxleitner 2 each.
Kendrick held a 28-31 edge on the boards with Poxleitner leading Prairie with 7 rebounds.
Shears had 4 steals while Enneking had 5 assists.
Prairie was 11 for 43 from the field, 26%, and 12 for 17 at the line, 70%. Kendrick was 17 for 38 from the field, 45%, and 15 for 21 at the line, 71%. Deeds was 10 for 13 from the field on her way to a game-high 24 points as she was the difference in the game.

Lady Pirates beat Timberline
Nine points in a 30 second span of the third quarter helped the Prairie Lady Pirates break open a close game and go on to beat Timberline 56-30 in loser-out District Tournament action at the Activity Center at LCSC in Lewiston Friday, Feb. 6.
Mary Shears goes for a lay-up after making a steal against Timberline. In the first half Prairie struggled with their shooting as they hit only 7 of 28 first half shots.
Oddly, the one player who hit her shots was Kara Guyer, who was 3 for 3 in the half. She has spent all season trying to regain her shooting touch.
Despite the poor shooting Prairie led 7-4 at the end of the first quarter and after a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, 14-4.
Jennifer Enneking started that 7-0 second quarter run with a 3-pointer and Guyer and Mary Shears each had a steal and drive for a lay-up.
After that run though Prairie went scoreless for over 5 minutes while Timberline, behind 6’1” center Lundyn Jared fought back to within 2 at 14-12 with 35 seconds left. Jared had 6 of the 8 points in the Spartans’ run.
With 28 seconds left in the half NaTosha Schaeffer broke the scoring drought with a shot from just inside the foul line.
After their lackluster first half effort coach Steve Wilson did what he called a “Bobby Knight” during the halftime break.
He apparently got his message across as 10 seconds into the second half Enneking hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key. 26 seconds later Kaylee Uhlenkott, who had just 1 point in the first half, also hit a 3-pointer. She then stole the inbounds pass, scored and was fouled, converting the free throw. Prairie had turned a 4-point halftime lead into a 13 point lead just 39 seconds into the second half.
Jared scored a pair of free throws then Prairie had a 6-0 run with Uhlenkott scoring 5 of the 6.
Uhlenkott wound up scoring 17 points in the third quarter as Prairie blitzed Timberline23-10 to take a 39-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Mary Shears scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter and Guyer added a putback as Prairie pushed the lead to 46-22 then turned the game over to the subs.
Uhlenkott wound up with 18 points to lead the team with Guyer and Shears scoring 9 each and Enneking 6. Megan Sigler added 4 points, Amber Holthaus 3, NaTosha Schaeffer, MaKayla Schaeffer and Haleigh Schmidt 2 each and Francesca Johnson 1.Alena Hoene is open for a shot against Kendrick.
Prairie was outrebounded 13-26 in the first half but nearly reversed that in the second half, 22-12 to wind up 35-38 for the game. Shears had 7 rebounds to lead the Pirates with Guyer and Uhlenkott adding 5 each.
Kristi Poxleitner had 5 steals with Guyer adding 4 and Holthaus and Enneking 3 each as Prairie forced timberline into 33 turnovers.
Poxleitner, Guyer and Holthaus had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 19 for 55 from the field, 35%, but were 12 for 27 in the second half, 44%. They were 14 for 21 at the line, 68%. Timberline was 12 for 41 from the field, 29%, and 5 for 7 at the line, 71%.
Jared scored 21 of Timberline’s first 26 points with freshman Ariel Jared scoring the other 5.
With the win Prairie improves to 12-8 on the season and was to play Genesee Tuesday evening in another loser-out game. If they won that they would play the Lewis County-Kendrick winner Thursday, Feb. 12 at 6:15 p.m. for third place and a chance at state. The third place winner faces the winner between Wallace and Lakeside on Saturday, Feb. 14, probably at Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene.
