Lady
Pirates knock off Genesee
The Prairie Lady Pirates stayed alive at District Tuesday, Feb. 10 by knocking off longtime District nemesis Genesee 41-32 at the LCSC Activity Center. It was the third time in 5 years that Prairie had met Genesee in an elimination game at District and Genesee had won the previous 2. Prairie started slowly as Genesee jumped out to a 0-7 lead midway through the first quarter. Prairie finally got on the scoreboard with 4:46 left when Mary Shears scored. Her basket started a 10-2 run for the Pirates that gave them a 10-9 lead at the end of the quarter. Shears scored 6 of Prairie’s 10 first quarter points. Prairie outscored Genesee 8-5 in the second quarter as Kara Guyer and Kaylee Uhlenkott scored 4 points each. Prairie held Genesee to 1 for 12 shooting from the field in the quarter. In the third quarter Prairie scored the first 6 points to push their lead to 24-14. Guyer, Shears and Uhlenkott each scored a basket and Jennifer Enneking picked up an assist for each score. Genesee then intensified their defense and started forcing Prairie turnovers as they scored the final 5 points of the quarter to cut the lead in half. Uhlenkott opened the fourth quarter scoring with a free throw but Genesee scored the next 4 points to pull within 2 points at 25-23 with 6:06 to play. At that point Prairie started to gain traction against Genesee’s intensified defensive pressure and bounced back with a 7-0 run that pushed the lead back to 9 at 32-23 with 4 minutes to play. Genesee never got any closer than 6 the rest of the way as Prairie made enough of their free throw attempts to hold off the Bulldogs down the stretch. Uhlenkott wound up with 14 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Guyer scoring 10, Shears 9, Enneking 7 and Megan Sigler 1. Prairie held a 38-32 rebounding edge led by Uhlenkott with 12 and Shears with 10. Enneking had 5 steals and 4 assists while Guyer had 4 steals and Kristi Poxleitner had 4 assists. Prairie was 17 for 43 from the field, 40%, and 7 for 17 at the line, 41% while Genesee was 10 for 45 from the field, 22%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%. Kendrick ends Lady Pirates' season For the second year in a row Prairie’s Lady Pirates lost to Kendrick in the third place game at District, this time 42-63 Thursday, Feb. 12 at LCSC’s Activity Center in Lewiston. It was also the second time in the tournament that Prairie had lost to Kendrick. Kendrick jumped out to a 2-7 lead in the game but Kaylee Uhlenkott connected on her first 4 shots of the game, including a 3-pointer to help Prairie come back to take a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. Uhlenkott got them within 3 and then Mary Shears and Kristi Poxleitner each scored in close to give Prairie the lead. Uhlenkott opened the second quarter scoring with a putback to put Prairie up but 3 but Kendrick tied it on a 3-point play. Kara Guyer scored a putback with 5:50 left in the half and Jennifer Enneking stole the ensuing inbounds pass and scored a lay-up to give Prairie a 19-15 lead. That was it though for the Pirates as Kendrick finished the half with a 2-9 run to take a 21-24 lead and then scored the first 6 points of the second half. Prairie was limited to just 4 free throws in the third quarter as Kendrick pulled away to a 25-40 lead. Prairie had just 5 turnovers in the first half but committed 9 in the third quarter as they attempted just 6 shots, only 1 by Uhlenkott who had 13 points in the first half. Kendrick kept extending their lead in the fourth quarter as they converted 12 of 15 free throws and 6 of 8 shot attempts. Kendrick’s Morgan Jo Wolff had her best game in 3 tries against Prairie, scoring 24 points and hit four 3-pointers. She struggled with her shooting in the two previous games between the 2 teams. Prairie did a good job of shutting down Kendrick’s 6’3” post Myriah Deeds, who had scored 24 in the previous district tournament game, as she had just 2 points through the first 3 quarters but help Kendrick put the game away with 11 fourth quarter points. Uhlenkott led Prairie with 20 points while Enneking scored 6, Shears and Guyer 4 each, Megan Sigler 3 and Kristi Poxleitner 2. Rebounding was even at 26 each with Shears grabbing 11 rebounds to lead the Pirates despite sitting out much of the second half after turning the ball over on consecutive trips down the floor. Uhlenkott added 8 rebounds. Enneking had 3 steals and 3 assists. Prairie was 15 for 41 from the field, 37%, and 7 for 8 at the line, 88%. Kendrick was 18 for 34 from the field, 53% and 21 for 35 at the line, 60%. They were 11 for 18 from the field in the second half, 61%. With the loss Prairie ends their season with a 13-9 record.
