Guyer, Laurino have 5 hits each in win over Grangeville
Kara Guyer went 5 for 5 with 8 RBI to lead the Prairie Lady Pirates to a 14-4 win over Grangeville in Prairie’s home opener Tuesday, April 7.
Guyer had a homer and 3 doubles in the game.Kara Guyer pounds the ball deep into the outfield.
Leora Laurino also went 5 for 5 in the game with a double and a triple and 5 runs.
Grangeville took the early lead with 2 runs in the top of the first with 3 hits and 2 errors contributing to the scoring.
They didn’t keep the lead for long though as Prairie came up with 3 in the bottom of the inning.
Leora Laurino hit a 1-1 pitch over the left fielder’s head to the base of the fence for a triple to lead off the game and scored on Amber Holthaus’ single to right. Guyer then doubled to deep left center to score Holthaus and went to third when the throw went to home plate. Guyer then scored the go-ahead run on Rachel Kaschmitter’s sacrifice fly to right.
Prairie added 2 more runs in the second inning. Haleigh Schmidt led off with a walk and stole second. She advanced to third on Laurino’s bloop single to left with Laurino advancing to second as the fielder threw to third to try and catch Schmidt who had to hold up in case Laurino’s fly ball was caught.
Schmidt scored on Holthaus’ groundout to second and Laurino scored on Guyer’s pop fly single to right.
Grangeville scored an unearned run in the fourth on a walk, single and error.
Prairie bounced back with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kendra Dinning and Laurino each singled to left  and Holthaus followed with a grounder to third that forced out Dinning.
Then coaches both then told Guyer to see if she could take a pitch and drive it. She followed their advice very well as she hit the first pitch in her at-bat over the left field fence for a 3-run homer.
After a second out, Megan Sigler beat out an infield hit, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored on Alena Hoene’s single up the middle. Hoene then stole second and scored on Camille Schumacher’s single down the right field line.
Grangeville added a run in the fifth without benefit of a hit. Pitcher Sam Frei easily got the first 2 outs then got wild as she hit a batter and walked the next 2. The run scored on an attempted pickoff play at third as the ball got past Dinning. Frei then settled down and struck out the next hitter on 3 pitches.
Prairie scored 2 in the bottom of the fifth as Laurino stretched a single into a double by hustling all the way out of the batter’s box. Guyer then drove her in with a double to right center and may have had a triple to compete the cycle (homer, triple, double, single all in one game) but stopped at second when Laurino missed third rounding the bag and had to retreat and tag the bag before going home. Kaschmitter then reached on an error and Sigler walked to load the bases and Guyer scored on a sacrifice fly by Hoene.
In the bottom of the sixth Prairie needed 2 runs to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Dinning singled to right with 1 out and Laurino picked up her fifth hit of the game. Holthaus lined hard to second for the second out then Guyer came up and ended the game with a 2-run double to the left field corner. If the game hadn’t been already over she might’ve stretched that hit to a triple as she jogged from first to second for the double.
Prairie pounded out 16 hits in the game led by Guyer and Laurino. Dinning added 2 singles while Holthaus, Sigler, Hoene and Schumacher each had a single.
Hoene and Holthaus each had 2 RBI while Kaschmitter and Schumacher had 1 RBI each.
Frei gave up 4 unearned runs on 5 hits, 3 walks and 1 hit batsman while striking out 6.
