This is national HOSA week
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA's goal is to encourage all health occupations instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSTE-HOSA Partnership.
HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in HSTE programs. HOSA is 100% health care!
Since its inception in 1976, HOSA has grown steadily reaching nearly 107,000 members through 47 chartered HOSA State Associations and approximately 3,000 secondary and postsecondary/collegiate chapters in 2008-2009.
HOSA is not a club to which a few students in school join. Rather, HOSA is a powerful instructional tool that works best when it is integrated into the HSTE curriculum and classroom. HSTE instructors are committed to the development of the total person. Those who join the HSTE-HOSA Partnership recognize the importance of providing students with training far beyond the basic technical skills needed for entry into the health care field. The rapidly changing health care system needs dedicated workers who, in addition to their technical skills, are people-oriented and capable of playing a leadership or followership role as a member of a health care team.
HOSA's mission is especially critical when considering the acute shortage of qualified workers for the health care industry. It is essential that the HSTE-HOSA Partnership maintain its momentum and encourage all HSTE instructors to integrate HOSA into their curriculum and classrooms.
Idaho HOSA holds a spring State Leadership Conference in Boise.  The conference allows all students who participate, the opportunity to compete in up to two events in various aspects of the health care field, from HOSA Bowl and EMT to Medical Photography and Extemporaneous Health Poster.  These events help students to learn about various health careers and other medical information.
In order for Prairie students to compete at the State conference, each student must complete at least 20 recorded hours of work time (related to their chosen events) and 20 recorded hours of volunteer time.  HOSA members are busy throughout the year volunteering for a variety of organizations.  When the student completes his /her requirement, they are then eligible to compete at the state conference.  If students place in one of the top three spots they are then eligible to compete at the National level.  The National Leadership Conference this year will be held in Orlando, FL.
Prairie’s HOSA group has 15 members this year.  Chelsea Geis, Devin Schmidt, Haleigh Schmidt, Sheri Schumacher (Historian), and Ashley Shumway are new members this year.  Those returning members are Danielle Cochran (Reporter), Seth Guyer (VP), Brock Heath, Kayla Johnson (Secretary), Conner Rieman (President), Demetria Riener, Mike Karel, Joshua Roeper (Treasurer), Amanda Stinson and Joshwa Zigler.  With our larger numbers and talented students, we hope to have a very successful year, and send all fifteen of these members to Orlando.  Sheri Daly RN, is the advisor for Prairie’s HOSA group.
HOSA would like to thank everyone in the community for their continued support to make our chapter so successful!
