Lady Pirates rout Potlatch for first win
After several near misses the Lady Pirates finally picked up their first win of the season as they rolled past Potlatch 53-23 in a league game played at Cottonwood Tuesday, Dec. 22.MaKayla Schaeffer drives into the lane.
The Pirates thoroughly dominated the first quarter as they outscored the Loggers 21-0 in the period, forcing 8 turnovers while the Loggers went 0 for 10 from the field.
Prairie meanwhile connected on 10 of 20 attempts with Megan Sigler, Amber Holthaus, Kayla Johnson and Mary Shears each scoring 4 points. 
Prairie dominated also on the offensive boards as 4 of their 10 baskets were putbacks.
Prairie eased off the throttle in the second period, giving their bench a lot of playing time, but still led 25-9 at the half.
Potlatch scored the first 3 points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 13 but Prairie then ran off 11 straight points to squelch any Potlatch hopes of a comeback. Prairie pulled away to lead 42-16 after three quarters.
MaKayla Schaeffer dominated the fourth quarter scoring as she went 4 for 4 from the field and scored 8 of Prairie’s 11 fourth quarter points as Prairie led by as many as 32 before settling for a 30-point win.
MaKayla Schaeffer’s strong fourth quarter led her to a game-high 11 points. 
Kayla Johnson, in a rare starting role, played strong throughout and turned in a double-double as she had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Sigler scored 8, Holthaus 7, Shears and NaTosha Schaeffer 6 each, Fran Johnson and Samantha Keating 2 each and Haleigh Schmidt 1.
Prairie held a 44-33 rebounding edge led by Kayla Johnson with 11. Shears added 9 rebounds.
Holthaus and Callie Mader, a freshman seeing her first varsity action, had 3 steals each. NaTosha Schaeffer had 5 assists while Kayla Johnson had 3.
Freshmen Tanna Schlader and Taylor Heitman also saw their first varsity action in the game.
Prairie was 24 for 61 from the field, 38%, and 5 for 13 at the line, 39%. Potlatch was 8 for 41 from the field, 20%, and 7 for 14 at the line, 50%.
With the win Prairie improves to 1-4 in league play and 1-8 on the season.
Prairie also dominated the JV game, winning 31-17 as the C team players picked up a lot of playing time.
