Pirates can't hold off Troy rally
The Prairie Lady Pirates led at halftime but couldn’t hold off Troy as they wound up losing 32-41 at the Kamiah Christmas Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 29. Prairie led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter and 22-18 at the half as they were looking to win their second straight game. Troy though came out and dominated the third quarter outscoring Prairie 4-12 to take control and pulled away in the fourth by outscoring the Pirates 6-11. MaKayla Schaeffer led Prairie in scoring with 11 points with Fran Johnson, Megan Sigler and Mary Shears scoring 5 points each. NaTosha Schaeffer scored 4 and Amber Holthaus scored 2. Lady Pirates beat NIC The Prairie Lady Pirates outscored North Idaho Christian of Coeur d’Alene 15-3 in the final four minutes to pick up their second win of the season 60-48 at the Kamiah Christmas Tournament Wednesday, Dec. 30. 
Until those final 4 minutes it was a close game as the lead changed hands 5 times and the score was tied 5 different times. Prairie took the early lead as they jumped out 6-0 on a basket each by Amber Holthaus, Mary Shears and Megan Sigler. NIC came back to cut the lead to 1 but a pair of free throws by Shears made it 11-8 with 4:04 left in the first quarter. NIC then outscored Prairie 2-10 to take a 13-18 lead by the end of the quarter. Prairie started the second quarter with a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 19-18 as Shears, MaKayla Schaeffer and Sigler each scored a basket. NIC responded with their own 0-6 run and led 23-30 with 1:26 left in the half. Fran Johnson scored with 25 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 5 and then picked up a defensive rebound on the NIC end. Sigler dribbled across the halfcourt line and heaved the ball toward the hoop from about 30 feet out as the half ended. The ball banked off the glass and went through the hoop to cut the lead to 28-30 at halftime. Kayla Johnson scored to open the third quarter and tie the game but NIC quickly took the lead back. Prairie took the lead with 6:31 left in the quarter when Amber Holthaus sank a 3-pointer. NIC tied the game with a free throw. Holthaus scored a putback but NIC tied it again. Prairie attempted to take the lead back but turned the ball over. Holthaus then stole the inbounds pass and scored to put Prairie on top again. After NIC tied the score again, Sigler and Shears scored to give Prairie a 4-point lead. NIC responded with a basket to cut the lead to 41-39 heading into the fourth quarter. A 3-pointer by NIC to open the fourth was answered by a 3-pointer from NaTosha Schaeffer. Shears then hit a bank shot to put Prairie up 45-42. Three free throws by NIC tied the score at 45 with 4:38 left to play. Prairie then started their game-ending run when Kayla Johnson scored with 4:01 left. 30 seconds later Fran Johnson sank a 3-pointer. Sigler then drove to the basket to give Prairie a 52-45 lead. NIC scored a free throw but Kayla Johnson rebounded the missed second attempt which led to a basket by MaKayla Schaeffer on the other end. Sigler made it a 10-point lead with a basket with 1:02 left. With 47 seconds left NIC scored their final points with MaKayla Schaeffer and Sigler each scoring in the final 36 seconds to give Prairie their biggest lead of the game as the final score. Sigler wound up with 15 points to lead the Pirates while Shears added 12 points. Holthaus scored 9 with MaKayla Schaeffer scoring 8. NaTosha Schaeffer and Fran Johnson scored 5 points each and Haleigh Schmidt scored 2. Prairie held a 49-40 edge on the boards with Shears pulling down 17 rebounds while Kayla Johnson added 9. Sigler had 4 steals while Holthaus had 5 assists and NaTosha Schaeffer had 4 assists. Prairie was 28 for 68 from the field, 41%, and 4 for 17 at the line, 24%.
